Why everyone should have a 50 cent P-38

I used an old P-38 for years as my primary can opener when I first moved out on my own - until I moved in with my wife and got 'real' kitchen stuff. I just bought a new one. I'm sure the old one still works great, just haven't seen it recently, now that I'm not reaching for it to open supper every night. I ordered it online from countycomm.com - they carry both the p-38 and p-51.

P-38 - $.40
P-51 - $.75

I ordered some other fun toys to make it worth the shipping.

When I was in the Army there were 2 or 3 in every case of C-rations. We coveted those things. What you want is the P-51, a larger version of it and quite a bit easier to use. Most surplus stores will have em.

There were four in every case of C's in Nam c'68-'69. Kept one on the dog tag chain there and on my keyring since. I actually was busted for it at the courthouse, reporting for possible jury duty. They tossed in a $2 Tyvec pouch and required I fill-out an in-triplicate form for its return on my way out. I was escorted around security on my way out with the bag still sealed!

I can't count the times Mr. Speaker or Malin has saved my a**!

When can-openers are outlawed,

only OUTLAWS will have can-openers !

LMAO I'd always wondered what those gizmos were called, IIRC mine came with sardines (in mustard sauce :p) not sure if these are 'ridgy didge' or not but they look pretty darn close, I've had them for years like those earlier GI's I had a feeling they might come in handy (so I kept them)

Those look interesting.

However, the rounded edges seem to have less functionality of a multi tool than a original p-38.

Has anyone tried to use one as a bottle opener successfully?

Yes. :D It's not an easy, one single motion removal like a purpose designed bottle opener. A couple pries around the cap to loosen it and it pops off relatively easily though. ;)

Couldn't someone make something useful of the handle by turning it into a file or something?

i have no idea where to get these, and as they are US issued P-38s, i doubt any army surplus store in my country will carry it.. and i dont need 500 pieces, i want like 5?

can anyone send me some? im willing to pay for it...and seeing as they are really small, they could almost be sent in a regular envelope...

pm me? thanks :)

I've got a P38, a practical & neat tool. Nobody will know what it is..until its needed. Next time I order from CountyComm I probably add a few more or a P51 to my order.

I ordered a titanium dog tag from uniquetitanium and they threw a P-38 in there! Kudos! Went straight on my keychain next to the Spyderco.
