Terralux question

Hello,

I recently received my 6D Cell Maglite and Terralux 310M-EX drop in for it.

Installation went smooth and everything but there is 1 thing I cannot figure out.

How do I switch from 1,000, 500, and 100 lumen modes?

On the box it says

[qutoe] The mode switch ( in side opening of bezel) will ship from the factory set for the multi-mode function (left-most position). For single mode, use paperclip or similar object to slide switch to the right[/quote]

And on the website it says

The MiniStar31M-EX® is the ultimate LED conversion for your 4-6 D-cell MagLite®. 1,000 lumens of pure, white LED light, LEDSense® thermal management, multi-mode or single-mode functionality, 3 precision optics, and unsurpassed, field-tested durability deliver the performance of flashlights costing much more. Take your MagLite® into the next realm of performance with a MiniStar31M-EX® LED Conversion.
  • Fits MagLite® 4-6 D-cell flashlights
  • Multi-mode function: (high/medium/low), user configurable to single mode via switch on side of module
  • Electronically regulated for constant light output
  • Extends battery runtime
  • Approximate runtimes:
    • 2 hours on high (1,000 lumens)
    • 6 hours on medium (500 lumens)
    • 37 hours on low (<100 lumens)
Both of these are very vague to me and I was wondering if anyone can clarify for me.

you have to press the maglite switch but not all the way, half way, before it clicks, but far enough to close circuit, than release, than do it again within half a sec or so, this will change the mode, when you get mode you want press the switch all the way to click.
if it doesn't work remove the drop in and make sure little switch on the side is in multimode position.

Yes I'd also like to see some beam shots of it. I've wanted to get one of those for a long time now. Thanks.

I'll post some this weekend. :) I have to say while it isn't tightly focused like my SureFire it does throw a ton of light.

 looking forward seeing some beamshots. I've been considering getting myself a maglite as a reference for beamshots, but I also want a terralux upgrade for it.

Take both lights outside and I'm sure you'll be amazed at the throw - and wow us with great beamshots ate the same time ;)

MagLED have some decent throw. My MiniMag reaches across 80 yards of lake on brightly moonlit nights, and the Mag3D spots deer on the island.

I know... BLack Rose's 2D mag led pretty much out throws my LD40, which is just short of the TK40... I'm really curious about the 310M-EX dropin. Viper: any chance of before / after outdoor shots???

Sorry for not having them up I've just been bogged with work lately.

I'll try to have them up by next week and I'll include before/after shots on all three settings.

Hi Guys,

I have a new 4D Maglite and I put the Terralux TLE-310M-EX into it.

You put aside the reflector and retaining ring and just screw this dropin over the original LED thread.

It works great as a floodlight but don't expect a narrow beam of light like is the case in most Maglites.

I get a narrower crisp beam with the stock standard Maglite 3D LED for around $30.

Don't forget, when you assemble this Terralux device you lose the beam adjustment and just have a set floodlight using three LEDs and reflectors in one head.

The more LEDs then the result is usually less throw.

If you want flood go for it.

If you want a reasonably narrow beam go for the T6 500 lumen dropin from Ledmag in the Netherlands, as I have this in one of my Maglites as well.

I get a reasonable throw with a wider than normal centre beam but much more light overall.

There are so many great lights out there with flood and beam why would you want to go to all that effort to try upgrading a Maglite?

Then with Maglite mods you have to worry about whether to use D cell Alkaline batteries or NIMH batteries and in some cases dummy batteries.

The battery part of things is a real pain in Maglites IMHO.

Nearly every mainstream flashlight now caters for 18650 and CR123 Li-ions.

I love my Olight M3X and Olight SR50 with the 2 x 18650 and 6 x CR123 battery carriers.

I have the new Dereelight DBS-T Aspherical with the Cree XR-E R2 EZ900 LED and that thing is brilliant for spotting and rifle use, but it is a specialist tool.

I have given up on Maglite mods forever.

Really, why try turning a Volkswagen into a Porsche?

Just go out and buy one of the bigger Olights or a Crelant 7G5 V2 or a Thrunite Catapult V3 and you get throw and plenty of spill. :)

You lose the focussing ability because the original reflector is taken out when you install the LED module.

The module has 3 x Cree XP-G LEDs with 3 reflectors and there is very little throw at all.

The description of the product says "Beam - Medium".

It is just more of a big floodlight.

I have a 4D Maglite and have just done the same upgrade.

Maglites are usually known for their throwing ability more than anything else.

If you think you are going to get that narrow little beam but at 1000 lumens you are dead wrong!!!

I just bought the Olight SR90 with 2 Li-ion battery packs and a 12V DC car adaptor to charge when in the car.

If you are used to carrying around Maglites then the SR90 is no real problem weightwise.

It is as good as they say it is, what a great thrower and good spill too.

the module has xp-g leds, not t6 leds.
i have old version with xr-e leds and 8* optics, it throws quite good.

You are right, I have corrected my original post.

I have done so much Maglite modding I get lost sometimes.

At least on this 310 version they got rid of that "STARBURST" beam pattern.

Great LED upgrade if you want plenty of flood.

I like the T6 LEDMAG 500 lumen upgrade because you retain a reasonably tight beam and you don't lose the focussing ability.

I installed this upgrade and it is a pretty good thrower.

that starburst pattern is what made old model throw, it is led die reflection, due to tight lens, but i don't see it as a problem since it only visible on white wall from about 10 feet or less.

Hi guys, I just upgrade my Maglite 6D with the terralux 310 MEX. Very pleased as its got a brighter light and I really love the maglites size and weapon capabilities as a baton. I do have a question though... the terralux 310 is supposedly 1000 lumens, yet it has a range of 140m, whereas an LED lenser or even another given torch with 220 or 300 lumens has a beam range of 300 metres. Why is that so?

could someone please give me some insight
