Penlight

I'm looking for a 2xAAA penlight to be daily carried in a shirt pocket. Needs to be slim (like a pen), light weight, sub $50, and relatively spilly vs. throwy.

I'm considering:

Preon Penlight
Fenix LD05
Streamlight Stylus Pro


My concerns are:

Preon Penlight - the high mode seems virtually unusable since it runs the batteries out after 25 mins. Medium mode however seems decently bright for a very good length (also looks the most like a pen).
Fenix LD05 - lumens and length seem very practical on paper, but I've heard the lumens are overestimated.
Streamlight Stylus Pro - the cheapest option, but I've read that this one is more throwy then spilly, no multimodes, and a harder to activate switch.

What do you guys think between these? Any other's I should be looking at? (I considered the Preon 2, but the middle mode seems too low and the high mode can't be used for a whole hour)

Not a huge fan of 2xAAA penlights, but the Preon Penlight appealed to me for its perfect camouflage. It has become an EDC favorite whenever I wear button-down shirts. I collect in the efficient 1xAA/14500/sub-lumen category, and so have many lights that will outperform the Penlight (brighter, dimmer, longer runtimes, etc), but they often get left behind when I have a shirt pocket. Not particularly interested in any other penlight though, unless perhaps someone comes up with a stealth sub-lumen version.

The LED is not very well centered, but since I exchanged it against a Nichia 219A on mine, I didn't care. Very nice light, awesome for that price.

I'm using a Preon 2 at work and think it's great.
The batteries last a long time for me but I use it mostly in low mode.

One light that I don't own but think looks good is Nextorch K3.
It has a medium level at 70 lumens for 160 min acc to specs.

I got a 5.11 Tactical PLx for free when I ordered some tac pants awhile ago. It's a surprisingly great little light. Very slim, durable, and puts out a nice floody beam with a little hotspot. I use it every morning around the house. I don't think it's worth 24.99 (I'd pay 17-20 IMO), but the clip is strong, and its unnoticeable in a shirt or pant pocket. Outdoors it's good for maybe 10 yards, but indoors the wide beam will easily light up 25 yards very well. Still on original alkalines with every day usage for the past 4 months. If its on sale it's a good buy.

What did you use for a driver? Did you stick with the hugsby original?

I used to have the Streamlight and I think it is pretty good. It has a fairly wide beam and the battery lasts for quite a while. The button gets easier to press after using it for a few weeks. The pocket clip is not very strong so that might be the reason how I lost mine. I am ordering an Olight i3s, which has three modes. It is 80 lumens on turbo mode and runs on one AAA. It might not be what you are looking for though.

Where are you finding the Fenix 05? Seems sold out everywhere I checked.

Anyway, I am a huge fan of the Fenix LD02. Awesome little booger. Not sure if TWO AAA is a requirement of yours though.

I own or have owned tons, dude I mean tons, of AAA lights Both singles and doubles. My favorite double has to be the Nitecore MT06, followed very closely by the Olight. It is darn near a tie to me with these two. Personal preferences may lead you to choose one. I would suggest, if possible, you buy both. Then you sell which ever you don't like. But chances are you will keep them both and use the heck out of them. For what its worth, my wife uses the Olight more. Can you guess why??? COLORS! She loves the blue. I concur it does have a very pretty blue finish.

Do your self a favor and check out the Nitecore. You may like what you see.

The Olight penlight is the only flashlight that actually looks like a pen. All the others mentioned have the dimensions of a penlight but look like a flashlight. If the
Olight was lying on a desk you would think it was a pen.

I have an older version of the Preon, great little pen light. It is a bit larger in diameter than an ink pen, but still can be carried in a shirt pocket.

The Preon was one of two work flashlights I carried. It was ultimately replaced with a Nitecore "tube" that I now carry on my lanyard.

I never really looked too hard at the streamlight stylus because it used AAAA batteries and not the more readily available AAA.

What are you going to be using the light for? For how long during the course of a day, will it be on? Why a slender 2xAAA light and not a shorter, lighter, but slightly thicker, 1xAA light?

Stylus Pro broke within 2 weeks of purchase. Preon 2(I own in several colors) work great. I find low or medium to handle 99% of my needs so runtime on hi has never been an issue. My oldest Preon that saw a lot of EDC use works as good as the day I bought it. Four Sevens has them on clearance at great prices...Four Sevens also has the best Customer Service too...

I have been using a Pelican 1920 LED light for a few months now, and highly recommend it.

It is a bit larger then some others, but in my shirt pocket, I don't notice it.

It will take more abuse then probably any other 2 AAA light out there, from what I have seen with it.
