intrinsically safe lights

I'm in the safety committee for a gas processing plant we are building in wv

Operations and maintenance are in need of good flashlights for night time jobs. Th big problem is that they are sometimes in hazardous atmospheres. Anything that is not intrinsically safe they need a lengthy hot work permit and if the gas detector is going off they can't use one at all.

At the last facility we used diving lights with out incident but now we are looking for something that specifically says intrinsically safe.

We need a hand held light and a headlamp that could mount to a hard hat.
Those are the only real requirements.
I would prefer something with replaceable batteries not rechargeable. Price is no issue.

Look at Streamlights website. They have quite a few lights that rated for hazardous locations and they do state that they are intrinsically safe.
 
We use a night stick 5422. Not a bad light for intrinsically safe. It has dual led's one with a reflector one mule. It's not a headlamp though. You might consider separate headlamps.

Sorry to not clarify, I was wanting two separate lights. I like the stream light head lamp Broken Amazon link also the small penlight they have available might be nice for the electricians and mechanics. Streamlight seems like a good option, they prefer us to buy an American product, and they claim to be put together in the states at least

I work as a safety tech offshore in the Gulf of Mexico on a deepwater oil and gas production platform. For a small penlight, we use the Pelican L4 1830.

It's Class 1, Div 2 rated. Only drawback is that it uses the uncommon "AAAA" battery but we keep plenty of spare batteries available.

Nip down to your nearest protective clothing trade store, most carry all these safe lights for working in the gas and oil industry, it is no big deal they are easy to pick up.

I have a USAF permissable flashlight that is marked for methane/air mixtures areas and that title is followed by about 8 to 10 other flammable mix permissable ratings. I' say that one is intrinsically safe
 
I don't think the small penlights are intrinsically safe lights. You might want to look at the Propolymer series instead. The Proplymer has two lights with a hazardous rating. You'll need the one rated for gases - class 1 I believe.
 
If you go to Streamlights web page they give comprehensive information on safety ratings for their lights which are intended for hazardous environments.
 
Something to bear in mind is that to be 'intrinsically safe', all components in that light must also be 'intrinsically safe'. Generally this means only being able to use a couple of alkaline cells as these do not store enough energy to be dangerous by themselves. Even though a light might be safe to use in explosive environments, the other consideration is that if you drop it and it breaks, that it does not then cause an explosion.

In my experience 'intrinsically safe' lights are made of plastic, and use AAA, AA, C, or D size alkaline cells and are often still incandescent rather than LED.

Let us know what you go for once you have chosen them. I would also have pointed you in the direction of Streamlight.
 
Great points subwoofer on "intrinsically safe". I believe the Streamlight HAZ-LO series are all intrinsically safe and the line up includes a variety of styles, including standard type flashlights, headlamps, right angle lights, etc.
 
What level of intrinsically safe is needed? Even the common Princeton Tec EOS and Quad headlights are rated Class 1 Division 2. The best intrinsically safe lights are Class 1 Division 1 rated. This would include the Princeton Tec EOS II and Quad II headlights. Add these to your options. They are well made lights. The EOS II and Quad II come with a cloth headband for normal use, a larger rubber headband for strapping to a hard hat, and a piece of stick on velcro to directly attach to a hard hat.
