I started using only Lithium cells in the winter. AA, AAA, Cr123A, whatever it takes. I find that anything below 0C and the alkalines start to suffer. I used my G2 when I went camping last February and the temperature at night was around -15C, the light worked fine.
It should have come in a welded clamshell package with a paper board outer package. If I received a Surefire in anything but a sealed factory package I would return it immediately.
During the "Ice Storm of 1998" we were without power/heat for 18 days. All I had for light was a cheapo flashlight and candles. I survived just fine.
Now, I have $500 worth of flashlights, batteries, headlamps and better candles. I figure I'm set for life, whatever it can throw at me.

My daughter turned 2 in June. She LOVES flashlights and currently has a Pelican Tracker, a 2AA Maglite and a cheapo clicky LED.
Whenever we go to the "sporting goods" store and go to the flashlight aisle she approaches wide eyed and says "oooooh, look at that one". :)
The major disadvantage that alkaline has to lithium, for me, is that alkaline doesn't work in sub-zero temperatures, which is what we have 4 months straight up here. I'll still buy alkaline lamps, but they tend to be of the more disposable variety, like Maglite 2AA, for household use.
