Photongun: I think you would end up being dissapointed with the Maxabeam, it's just a ridiculously long throwing light but not all that much brighter in practical terms than what we saw on Thursday night, one heck of a lot of money for what in my books is no big deal.
The barn burner on the other hand...

You should take a look at some of the sales threads by CPF member cmacllel - look at the mini HID, the 1D HID, the 5" wonder, his custom ROP's and everything else he's made and sold and some still selling then of course there's fivemega and Icarus - have a look at his mods, some awsome quality there. look at the recipie for the LarryK14. I think money can be better spent then on the Maxabeam. For the cost of one Maxabeam I think you could get all of the above (pulling that out of my butt, haven't actually done the math) which would be far more satisfying.
If you have something that you want made and you have the cash to back it you might want to PM some of the lower volume modders like tranquillitybase or Icarus or litho123 and you could get something truly special built.

If you want a light that will truly kick butt and not be out of the reach of the normal human being try this recipie:

shortened 6D mag, side switch removed and fitted with 10 AMP tailswitch
tri bored (tube may need to be split and bored because of length) for 3 x 4/3A 4000mah cell stacks x 4 & two with a spacer for 16.8v, a USL type bulb holder from Modamag, a 3.5" head from BST - hopefully someone will part with one... and the Osram 15v 150w bulb for somewhere near 10,000 output lumens and a sensible run time. If you want a smaller light then use smaller batteries which will reduce run time. cmacllel has built a similar light, do a search on "got lumens?"

My usual advice when someone is debating which of two lights to buy is 'get both' but not this time.

I'd love to see either or both the Maxabeam or Megaray in the metal but they would be truly mad purchases. Photongun, if you are really going to get one, at least consider buying second hand to save some money.

Insane to even consider it, really...

WHOAAwhoawhoaaa ...fellas!...Take a chill pill. heh heh Notice how the mere mention of the maxabeam sends my fellow flashaholics into frenzied fits unfettered fury! Missionary I appreciate all your suggestions as they are definately worth considering (I'll look into some of the lights CPF modders have created/are offering) but after painstaking research and mulling over Kenshiro's photos I've come to the conclusion that the Maxabeam is my dream light. While I appreciate and covet owning lights that ooze huge, unmitigated amounts of light my 'fetish' lies with how light is focused. A light that is capable of targeting objects over 1km away with virtually undwindling intensity is what gets me excited. The appearance of a solid cannon of light shooting into the distance is what I like - that coupled with electronic focus. I definately want a madly modded hotwire or 2 but nothing can really take the place of a finely tuned finished product that has had millions of dollars of R&D go into it.

Regrettably I can't afford one now but it looks like I might have to buy one in the not to distant future. The barn barner is taking way to long and besides which, I doubt it could compete with the MB in a long range shoot out where beam coherence is of key importance. If anyone here happens upon a SUPERNOVA however please be sure to give me a shout as this light, from the sounds of it would make a great substitute for the MB. Solomon has decided to ignore me so my hopes of getting his last one are dashed.

Orbit, I can't afford the megaray and even if I could it looks to stupid for me to want to use. haha

If anyone here can source me a Supernova or find someone who wants to sell one (needs to be in perfect working order and near perfect cosmetic condition) I will sling you $200.

Cheers

P.S. Whats a DEORB?

DEORB is a project delvance and i cooked up, 2 different form factors, 3 interchangeable reflectors, extreme run time and versatility. (Will do everything extremely well but nothing "ultimate" benchmark)
Designed for use caving, night trecking. weight at 1.65kg for the largest and a 240mm deep dish parabolic reflector. dispersion adjustable from 4degrees to 60 degrees.
ATM theory says 8hour run time.
I've got all bar of the bits i need to make it happen. But i'm struggling to source them in Australia and I can't get a straight reply from customs about importing a part.

I'm eagerly awaiting beamshots of your first prototypes, especially of the small version. :) Until then its a maddening non stop pursuit of a Supernova and which components I want to (ab)use for my freaky bright hotwire to be!

Hey Fellas... I'd probably come depending on Date, Location etc...

I've got a trilux, 35 Watt HID, L2D CE, my own U bin Maglite Mod, Jetbeam C-LE. Nothing too outstanding...

Would be cool, let me know

Luke, we are slowly getting there. I might make a new thread now to see what happens. You have some interesting stuff there.
