I've been noticing lately that my 5 year old, 5 megapixel Sony Powershot doesn't seem to produce the quality of photos that I see a lot of people posting. After a trip to Best Buy today, I think I need a new camera. I remember when 5 MP was great, now I see they go all the way up to 12.

So, I don't really know what I need. I know most of what I want to do with it, though. I want to be able to take good, quality beamshots, which from what I understand means I need adjustable settings like exposure time and shutter speed, I think. I want something relatively small, that I could comfortably drop into a jacket pocket. I really just want to be able to take good pictures, relatively quickly. I don't want to have to wait an exceptionally long time between taking shots. I'm hoping I can get what I want for around 150, but I'd spend as much as 250 if I really need to.

Any advice?

It looks like the Canon does a pretty good job, especially on the first picture. Are the exposure and other settings adjustable for taking beamshots?

Don't get caught up in the mega pixel game. Very few casual photographers need more than 5 MPs. MPs do not indicate quality - they dictate how large a picture you can print w/o loosing quality. If you often make prints as large as 9 x12, 10 x 13 or larger, then you can benefit from more MPs.

Most of us rarely print anything as large as a 5 x 7. There have been a lot of improvements in processors in the past 5 years, so I'm sure that you could benfit from a newer camera.

I'm partial to Panasonics. Whatever you decide on, if it's a subcompact or a compact, make sure that it has a good quality optical Image Stabilization (IS).
