driver modification --> TrustFire SSC P7-C 900-Lumen LED Flashlight (2*18650/17670)

Hi all,

After having tested and disassembled the driver of my Trustfire SSC P7 flashlight, I have tried to modify the driver.

The original idea found on this thread consists simply to put two AMC7135 1400 mA in parallel to achieve the full 2.8A current on the SSC P7.
From this idea, as I really wanted to have a multi mode flashlight I have used an old (dead) driver from which I have removed everything but the µcontroler and the capacitor used to enable memory.
Here is the result :
trusfirep7sku12761moddrey4.jpg

On the top, the 2 AMC boards are just soldered together and connected to the bottom pcb board to the pin 7 of the µcontroller allowing PWM to the VDD pin of the AMC7135

All this fits easilly into the head :

And now.... If I'd used the original 2*18650 batteries to power the driver, I would for sure have fried the driver...:poof: as both the AMC7135 and the µcontroller are limited to 6.5V max...

So what I did is to use my "chemistry mixed" battery configuration already tested and explained on this thread : 1 Li Ion + 1 NiMh.

So here is the final configuration :
trusfirep7sku12761moddrpn1.jpg

The Liion is in red (please use a protected Li ion with a smaller capacity than the NimH one This is very important see my previous thread to understand the danger for your Liion, your NiMh ...)

Note the PVC tube which is here to recover the difference of diameter of the NiMh compared to the Liion
Note also the piece of copper to be added as a filler to recover the lenght of the NiMh.

trusfirep7sku12761moddrpv0.jpg

And the results ?

A very good new light even more powerfull than the original driver as you reach a full power of 2.9A at led side (the same as at tailcap side for this linear driver), 690 mA for Mid power (still brighter than a single Cree Q5) and only 50 mA for a very dim low mode.

Finally, I must say that this combo is quite interresting as you can get an extremely powerfull SSC P7 driven at full power and two other modes offering a much longer lifetime of the battery while also preventing to over heat the led. :twothumbs

It is not that difficult...

Just try it and it works :candle:
dare to do it  (not only a matter of corones :D)

Frankly speaking if you want to do it and do not dare, I can help you (at no charge of course)

Hey, I didn't notice that you were from Spain :twothumbs
Where in Spain ?
I am from Toulouse in France

Corones??? hahahah Is "cojones" any way is so funny read this here... Well, I just order the single version, one 18650, can I do this mode with this flashlight??? I order the drivers too...

Hi,

Yes you can of course do the modification with a single cell.
It will work :
- the modes will work
- the full power will be got...

BUT you will get it only a few minutes (10 min ?) while the cell is fully charged and the voltage above 3,6 V
As soon as the cell will empty (very fast when driving a led at 3A) the voltage will drop and the amperage will do so...
This is the reason why I have added a NiMH cell to add "extra voltage" to be ALWAYS above the led Vf (3,6V almost) in the range of regulation of the driver.

So the modification will be safe but the result not really satisfactory... A configuration with 2 cells is definitively better.

That is amazing work on the driver sandwich, I am going to do mine just like that from now on, perfect!

And I have used it during all this summer --> it works so well provided you pay attention to the "red marked advices" :candle:

This configuration is safe provided that :
- both batteries are charged independently
- both batteries are fully charged (at the beginning)
- the Li-Ion is protected and has a lower capacity than the NiMh

With the previous precautions, you can be sure that :
- the Li-Ion will empty first (less capacity)
- the Li-Ion cutoff pcb will protect the battery for potential reverse charging when it is empty
- the NiMh will never be empty before the Li-Ion (so it will never enter into reverse charge)

Thanks for let us know, but I think I cant go with this mod, any idea what kind of battery can I use with the single version? I am thinking in use this Converter but I am not sure if this work with two cr123 I dont know either if the flashlight can hold them... Maybe I wait to receive mine and start to moded...

Ok so I'm curious if you wourld get a longer runtime from 2 rcr123's off the AMC in the single `18650 host.

You will get the same runtime if use only one cell.

It is a linear regulator, so therefore it will always draw 2,8A from the batteries nomatter how high the voltage is

Hi, here is a quick runtime test to my Trusfire single 18650;

5 min warm no dim
15 min more warm no dim
25 min hot no dim
40 min hot 10% dim
45 min hot 10% dim
50 min warm 30% dim
55 min warm 80% dim
60 min 90% dim
105 min 95% dim flash

I make the measurents current to the drive, this is what I get...

p7currenthq4.jpg

I am thinking to make the same improvement what you do, now, how you separety this two pieces?

p7headlw1.jpg

I want to use this driver;

And I have this Circuit Board;

Their come with two 7135, I have to remove some 7135 and put it in the other Circuit Board, how many 7135 I have to use???

How long does 2.9A to the LED last?
