Looking for a bright simple to use light (many modes not needed). Requirements are 1 or 2 AA for power, and side button - no tailcap switch wanted. So far I know of ZL SC52, Fenix E25, JB SSA. Any others I'm missing? I'm leaning towards the ZL because the others have press & hold to turn on, instead of simple click. And it's a whole lot brighter going by the numbers!

The SC52 is definitely THE way to go if you are looking for 1xAA. Nothing else seems to come close when it comes to brightness, particularly when it comes to NiMH. The only thing to keep in mind is that it's pretty much all flood. Not that this is bad. In fact, I really like it. But if you prefer throw, you are bound to be disappointed. A less bright, but throwier 1xAA might suit you better.
 
I don't think Sunwayman's new side-by-side 2xAA d20a is as bright, & probably not exactly what you're looking for, but it does have side switches & just looks really really cool. Just wanted to make sure you're aware of it, anyone looking for a 2xAA side switch.

I really want one, for no good reason.

Nice & short for being 2xAA. Wish there were more parallel battery configurations like this. I think zebralight actually teased us with something similar a while back.

SC52 all flood...yes I guess I'd prefer something more medium-flood, but I think either will work. I'm also adding Jetbeam SSA to the list. Possibly simpler that SC52, since separate mode switch? Have to think about that some more. With 1 switch, people (non-flaslight ppl) could forget it has multi-modes and just think it turns on/off, maybe going into a lower level by mistake, etc...and then if it has memory, you get the idea. Not sure if SC52 does.

Huh? I don't know what you're referring to. I didn't know D20 existed. It reminded me of that old sanyo. Why is this even important?
 
I really like my SC51. It's my favorite right now.
I heard there are issues with the SC52 producing a weird color?

There's also the Fenix LD12 in the 1 AA category. I really like that form factor.
 
Another option: Nitecore EA1 and EA2. I have an EA2 as well as a ZL SC51w... I like and use both of them. The Nitecore is more throwy, the ZL more floody.
 
Yes, Nitecore EA. Only issue there is the buttons aren't differentiated enough. Only labeling, and that's too small for some to read. Compare to jetbeam SSA where they're clearly identified by sight and touch. I think I'm now leaning toward that one.

The LD12's fr/rear switch makes it not what I'm looking for.

In actual practice, I have no trouble differentiating. It only took a minute or two of playing with the EA2 for my thumb to know by habit to press the rearward button for on/off and the forward one for modes. The bump (raised portion) of the switch is easily felt by one's thumb. I can do it in the dark without really even thinking about it, no problem.

That said, Jetbeam makes good lights also.
