12 v supply for a Cree XM-L?

I have a Serfas true 1500 lumen headlamp (XM-L x3)and would like to power it by my 12 volt motorcycle battery. The battery that comes with the light is 7.4 v Can this be done? If so how?

You can use linear regulator to drop 3,5 extra volts to 8,5V i.e. LM317 : http://diyaudioprojects.com/Technical/Voltage-Regulator/

thanks for the suggestion Szemhazai. It seems a little complex for me and perhaps too delicate to strap on my motorcycle and bounce thru the desert at high speeds. Am I to assume that hooking up the XM-L to 13.5 volt will destroy it?
