123-battery naming scheme?

For example, the batteries in my Streamlight Scorpion are marked as K123LA's. Now, if I've understood correctly, I can replace them with any old 123-batteries, yes? So what exactly do all those extra symbols mean? Or do I have to make sure I buy K123*'s, *123LA's, or perhaps...?
 
As long as it has 123 in it you're good. CR123, DL123, etc. etc.

But. What does all that extra information mean then? I take it "DL" stands for some manufacturer (can't remember which but Duracell sounds like a good guess...

SF is for SureFire
EL is Energizer Lithium
CR is general term I believe.
PA is Panasonic
DL is Duracell

Generally the letter are brand name identity.
Atleast that's how I've always seen it.
