123\'s aren\'t working?????

I've made a charger for my cell phone that runs off of 4 NiMh AA batteries. It works great, and has recently saved me a 30+ mile walk. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif The phone draws 470ma while it's charging from the batteries. Now I'm trying to make another charger than runs from 2 123 batteries. I've only got two right now, one mostly dead (2.7v) and another mostly full...for 5.6 volts together. I hook this up to my phone, the phone acts like it is charging, but my meter says it is using 0.00 amps. What the hell? I even tried another meter just to make sure it was working...why isn't it using any power?

The mostly dead cell is not providing any current. As soon as a load is applied to the two cells, the total voltage is dropping like a rock because of the dead cell. You need two good batteries to do something like that.
Identical state of charge is ideal.
