Hi,

I got a 3xSSC P7 drop in for my Mag from Elektrolumens and now I need to buy some NiMH D-size cells. As I have a lot of different AA-size NiMHs I thought maybe it would be a good idea to get the 12AA>4D converter and have some use for the AAs, which now rest on the shelf.

The general question is: is it OK to put 12AAs (4 x 3 parallel) instead of four Ds or the drop in will just burn?

Going into details: is is a problem that the cells are different brands (GP, Varta, Energizer) and their capacities vary (from 2200 to 2700mAH)?

If you run 4S3P, you'd have the 6V needed and 3X the mah of the AA cells. But here's the catch. As you know Nimh AAs run anywhere from 1500-2900 mAh. So even running the highest capacity cells will only get you in the neighborhood of 8700 mAh. D cells run in the 10-12000 mAh range. So buy just running 4D in series you'd still get 6V but up to 12000 mAh. Also it goes without saying, make sure your adapter is parallel and not series. FM used to sell both series and parallel adapters, but he'd make the series in white and the parallel in black. Nice way to avoid confusion and blown bulbs or circuits.

Of course you'd have to factor in your charger. If you can't do D cells and don't want to purchase one that can, you may decide to go with an adaptor. Weight also might be an issue as well.

But no matter what approach you choose, it's never a good idea to mix cells, either brand or capacity.
