18650 batteries

I am sure there has been a lot of discussion over the yrs about the quality of battery prands / producers
What does the board think are the
1) best 18650 available
2) best value for the $ ( still being quality )

I have heard over theyears that there are anly a handfull of companies that make automotive batteries and most all that are made just get labled for all retail sellers- tht they are mostly all the same. Is that the same for rechargeable batteries?

I have limited experience with 18650 in recent years, but for quality unprotected cells I'd say Molicel M35A / P30B (capacity / amp delivery).
For protected cells, Keeppower has never failed me. Orbtronic is another option.

For "brand" name cells, the Fenix 3500 mAh cells are also quite good, same are the (arguably quite overpriced) Nitecore NL1835HP / -36HP.

Your questions are highly subjective when you get into it. Some cells have higher capacity but at a lower drain rate. This is good if you are using less amps. If you need higher amperage to power your device usually you have less capacity available. So really it is a trade off which depends your specific device. There are also protected and unprotected cells. Some devices do not have the extra space needed to use a protected cell. A unprotected cell can be more dangerous if you don't take precautions and should only be used in devices that feature some sort of internal protection circuits. Protected cells generally are safer but are usually slightly longer and there is extra circuitry which could fail leading to a premature death of the cell.

When it comes to cell quality generally you will get better cells from the big names like Samsung and Panasonic. Keeppower has been good to me. I dont own any Orbtronic or Molicel but I hear they are good. Vapecell seems to be good but does have some known flaws on some models. Research the particular cell before you buy. There is usually someone who has removed the wrapper to identify the cell. Branded cells like Nitecore and Fenix trend to be of a good make but once you identify who makes the actual cell they can be had for less.

A big part of the problem is many cells are recycled and re-wrapped. These are dangerous as it could be a mix of damaged, old or poor makes. These are generally the cells you find on Amazon or Temu for a cheap price. Avoid cells with the word "fire" in the name like Trustfire, Thrustfire and Ultrafire. Surefire is a good brand but is often faked so only buy from an Authorized dealer.
