my batteries will arrive today. I wondered if there was any special requirements for my first charge.

Other than checking for physical damage from shipping, nothing special is needed. Just charge them up and use them.

I would check the voltage first, in the (unlikely perhaps) chance that they could possible arrive over-discharged, or (even less likely) overcharged.
However, I think that is good practice generally, and I always check voltage before and after each charge cycle....

Update: they arrived dead. I put them in the charger. Took about 4.5 hours to charge, never got warm. Normal?They work great, so the charge was successful, but would have expected some warmth. What gives?
