18650 protected batteries

Hi,
I am planning on using Xtar 18650 3.7V, 3100mAh with my Ultrafire 501b, but i was wondering if its bad to run the light till the battery protection kicks in.

Does tripping the protection damage the battery itself?

The protection circuit for the low voltage should kick in way above the level which will damage the cell.
Most protected cells cut off ard 3.3 - 3.5v & your cell should be able to take discharging all the way till 2.9v..

The risk of relying on the protection circuit is if it were to fail (it's a $0.05 part after all) and you didn't realize it. Then low voltage would damaged the cell, destabilize the chemistry, and then it starts to become a vent-with-flame risk when you go to charge it. Risk is minimized if you always meter the cell before and after every charge.

Does Xtar use the Panasonic NCR18650a cell? A lot of 3,100 mAh cells are using the Pansonic battery with protection circuit added to it and just wrapping it in their color. These particular cells can be drained down to 2.50v safely, but your light should not be able to use them that low anyways.

Yeah, AFAIK Xtar uses Panasonic cells.
