This is only my 2nd post, so one more then i am free. As the title sugests, i have a pot of $280, i say dollars, but i am here in the UK (liverpool actually).
I have been looking at the XTAR S1, but my head has been turned by the THRUNITE TN31 thrower.
Does any one have more info on the new THRUNITE, and where can i order from.

Alright Woody,I'm up in the north east, there are a few decent places in the UK where you can get your lights from including your Thrunites there's Flashaholics,Ledfire torches there's also another decent one but I'll let you know the name of that place when i find it again. The 2 sites i mentioned have plenty of choice for very good throwers,so if i was you I'd take a good look at whats on offer before commiting yourself

What are you going to use it for, SAR, camping, hunting, or just to impress people?

Will be use the flashlight at work, work a night shift every other week and need a good light to check empty freight wagons and trains, making sure they are empty ready for loading

Have been looking at the XTAR S1. Any thing similar to this?

If you want a thrower. In a pocketable size then there is nothing better than the DEFT EDC LR+

This should have been in the recommend me section by the way. Go to that section and fill out the checklist so you can answer all of our questions at once.

Get a DBS T from Dereelight & get one with an XML its got great throw & a very good spill so you get the best of both worlds its much better than a xstar s1 IMHO,also you can lego a few different leds or reflectors to suit yourself & the price for the quality of these lights is outstanding. It will throw quite a bit farther than the Xstar as well usually lights with 3 LEDS are flood lights not throwers because the best throwers have a deep reflector & usually a small LED.The DBS T is quite a bit smaller so its cheaper on the batteries & much easier to carry.

I don't think you need a "Thrower". Searching rail cars, etc, is short range compared to the 600-1000 meter distances "Throwers" are made for.

You would probably be better served by a strong floody light, as those are best for searching/security purposes.

Throwers have very concentrated, small beams that project a small patch of light onto distant targets.

The Xtar S1, ironically, would not be a bad light, as it is not strictly a thrower, and does project a more floody beam compared to say the DEFT or Deerelights suggested. (I HAVE DEFT/Deerelights...and they rock, as pure throwers...not for this application though)

Along the same lines, the Fenix TK70 for example has a long run time and a very powerful floody beam that can still see things 400 meters away.

The Jetbeam RRT 3 XML also provides a nice floody beam with a few hundred M range.

The above lights will turn a football field sized area to daylight for you...making a search as fast as a click.

The beams with small patches of light require you to sweep the light to and fro, trying to stitch together what's out there, and, also giving those hiding a chance to duck when they see the beam coming, etc.

The Niteye Eye30 is similar to the S1 as well.

Some other lights that would most likely work great would be the 4sevens S18, the Klarus XT20, and the Nitecore TM11 Tiny Monster.

I own a DRY 4 mode, turbo level is crazy bright, so looking for something with more throw but with good spill.
The TK 70 would be ideal, just to long and bulky, so thats why i was looking at the S1.

Will check the DBS T out, thanks.
Oh by the way, what type of beam do you get from the DBS.

You can get whatever beam you want with a DBS T but the beam i would go for,for doing your job would be the DBS T with the XML it puts out 700 lumen with a smooth deep reflector giving you a very good throw & a massive spill.Having said that you could also easily afford the aspheric head to swap with your DBS T head for laser like throw for your budget & you'd still have half of your money left.By the way ask any owner of a DBS of there build quality, its outstanding.

Well, the S1 would probably work. I have not used a DRY 4, I have the DRY 3 XML, which is very bright, and floody, but the useful throw is barely 200 meters. Those 200 M are very well lit though. 😀

You can check out some of the other lights unless already familiar with them, etc...if looking to consolidate your opinion/rationalize the impending purchase, etc.

😀

I think what i am looking for is a good throwing floody, with 3x emitters possibly.
Where can you buy the DBS T with the changeable head? Thanks guys 🙂

Ok thanks, will check out all the info i have received, and try and come to a decision, there are so many choices, its hard to decide, but iam getting close to that purchase.

For checking the inside of empty wagons, even my PD20 would do the trick. It also depends on the ambiant light. I'd say a TK15 would be more in the lines of practical for your application, though. Floody with plenty of throw for your application. With a budget of 280$ I recommend to get 2 lights and a few spare batteries

Here in the UK you can get them from flashaholics.ledfire torches but probably the best place to get them from here is Taclight. The dereelight site is quite hard to understand if your not sure what your looking for.

I think a ThruNite catapult would fit your needs. Great throw with enough spill to light up immediate area. I've got the v2, and It always amazes me when I turn this light on. Lights up a wide area without a pinpoint beam.

The Xtar S1 throws better than the Dereelight DBS-T XM-L smooth reflector and has more spill. I think the S1 would best suit your requirement. If it's too big and heavy, then I would suggest the Sunwayman T40CS. It has more throw than the Dereelight XM-L smooth reflector and a better build quality and a decent amount of spill. Plus the threads are nicer. It has excellent regulation and looks like a Surefire.

It is also available in the UK.

Thanks will have a look at the dereelight DBS T, and the available attachments.

i just got the dbst aspherical package from flashlight connection dot com... its great for a pure thrower setup...

this thing is like having a laser pointer lol
