2D conversion problem

I was converting my 2D MAG to 5 CREE R2s, but due to delays in getting the reflector I started on a 4 LED one for now (using DX SKU.1915).

I have made my own 8AA to 2D which fits fine with my cheap Chinese AA 2500 NiMH. Unfortunately my trial run showed the cheap AAs couldn't supply the power the MaxFlex required for anything over 400mA through the LEDs. I bought some GP 2700 NiMH, which work fine in my test holder (1 amp through the LEDs no problem), but they are 0.2mm wider than my cheap AAs and won't fit in the MAG.

Any suggestions where I could get the MAG bored in the UK? Anyone on here lives in South Cumbria and has access to a lathe?

Would a C0 or C1 lathe be suitable for boring?
 
Someone made a thread in here where they fit 4 wide Duracell precharged in a Mag D body.

Maybe look at that or Eneloops. They are supposed to be the same batteries.
 
The cheap Chinese (BTY) 2500 AA I have are 14mm, the GP 2700 and 2300 are 14.2mm, GP 1800 are 14.1mm. I'm guessing any high capacity AA batteries will be wider.

Can anyone who has some Eneloops measure them for me please (or any other MiMH AAs that will give a good 2A+ drain with out a large voltage drop).

After a little use my GPs now won't keep up the current/potential required by the MaxFlex for running the LEDs at 1A (1.12A measured at LEDs, 2.3A through battery pack, rising to 2.6A before MaxFlex cuts back the power). I'm guessing I need to restrict to the 700mA setting (720mA LED, 1.15A battery pack).
