Keep in mind alkaline cells in the P10A2 is gonna suck a big one. He will have to use lithium primaries or NiMH cells.

The need for NiMH power will be universal for any high power light. Think about setting him up with a basic charger and cells. 2-4 LSD cells and a very basic smart charger should do him just fine. You can get that for $15-25 at some place like Walgreens or WalMart.
 
+1 for the Fenix L2T. I am looking to get on personally. I'm a shame to the name flashaholic at times as my EDC is a minimag and my backup is a solitare, both stock. By looking at the numbers you are getting minimag performance on Low and High is a little less than a 6-D Mag with fresh batteries.

I would rate the EagleTac and Fenix equal in build quality - that is to say both are good. Considering their cost may bump that up to very good. I liked the beam of the EagleTac better, though the Fenix had a warmer tint [P10A2 v TK20] Neither had meaningful rings or artifacts IMHO.

i'm actually going to include a Eneloop AA pack and Charger with the gift... so that part of it should be fine... come to think of it...

alk's will be like a last resort... which is perfect cuz when in a jam... he can always just buy some alk's.... but since he'll have 4xAA Eneloops... i think 90% of the time.. he'll be using those...

as for the build quality... i know Fenix is pretty damn good for the price... Eagletac... i've never owned... so can't really judge.. .but from what i've read.. they are the same... if not better than fenix... so i'm sure both will be good...

I use an EagleTac P10A2 as a backup for my T10C2, running it on cheap, department issue, Energizer Industrial Alkalines with no issues for over three months now and it is still brighter than most everyone else's 2xCR123 "tactical-lights". I can assure you there is no problem running alkaline batteries in the EagleTacs... and you will still "WOW" people who are used to Fenixes, Surefires, Streamlights, Inovas, etc.
 
How about StreamLight Jr. Lux? 2xAA, very simple KISS interface. I think they upgraded the module.
 
I am not a hunter but i am a mechanic. I had my L2D for a year now and it has performed flawlessly even thou i use it everyday, drop it all the time and submerged it in all kinds of nasty fluid. The eagletac light looks great but i just had to give fenix some credit for making such a solid light.
 
Regard headlight, I don't use one when work on my car. First the headband would get dirty so fast and pain to clean. Second most of the time I need illumination from an angle differrent from my head, or I'd just get blinded by reflection from the part that closest to my face.

That's a good point. I also wanted to add that headlamps aren't for everyone. A non-flashaholic or layman might consider them a little hardcore or "geeky." I wouldn't give a headlamp as a gift unless I was sure the person would actually use it! To them it might be like getting an ugly Christmas sweater (saw that in a movie once) that they only wear when you're around. :D
