Decided to do a lux test today after testing various other lights =)
Hid's take time to warm up so it started off at 3000lux or so, climed quickly to 12000lux, towards 15000lux, 18000lux, then all of a sudden It just errored out because the max this light meter can take is 20000lux. All readings taken at 40inches which is a bit more then the 1 meter that most modders test at. Just wanted to say that i believe that the mini-hid is now the official lux king, and nothing its size can compete against it =) , if i'm wrong, let me know.

title edited due to sproing's findings /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

It's got to be the light with the narrowest beam too! With its almost point-like light source.

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

Hey Ray, we'd need to have three separate crowns -- HID Lux King, Incandescent Lux King, and -- LED Lux King. Otherwise I'd always show up at the shootouts with a MaxaBeam or theater skylight...

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

Actually, you need to change the title to "30,000+ Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package". I've measured it at that with relatively fresh batteries.

Thanks again ufo for letting me get my hands on one of these bad boys. It was fun to build and its really kicks @ss for its size.

The problem is now that I've had my first taste of HID, I need more! This must be what a drug addict feels like.. Turning on the mini-HID gives me a nice buzz but I need something stronger /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We need to put together a group buy for some 35 or 50 watt ballasts and bulbs!

These HID lights are beasts!

Measure at 2M, then multiply your lux reading by 4.

Has this been discussed further?
Is it a possibility?
I would be very interested to acquire a 50 watt HID bulbed torch this size /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

the 50watt would be bigger and it is rather hard to give pump out 50watts or energy in such a small package.

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

How 'bout a 35 watt then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif ?

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

12 123s, 3 watt per 123, that's 3 volts 1 amp, should do for nearly 1 hour, 2D mag size? Either 6 123s in 2 rows, or 4 123s in 3 rows with a bored out body. The latter should offer a length slightly shorter than 2D mag.

Hmm... Mini Aurora anyone? Ops, the name is taken already isn't it? How about Mykra Aurora. Muwahahahha!

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

12 x 123 cells for an hour of light?

$12/hour to run that sucker. Ouch!

And I thought my $6/hour Mag was bad...

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

If you go by lumens / dollar / hour it makes a lot more sense! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For a Surefire M6, you're getting 500 lumens for 20 mins, that 6 dollars for 20 mins or $18 for 1 hour, 1 hour of 500 lumens from a Surefire M6 cost you $18, but 1 hour of 3200 lumens (did I get my lumens wrong?) from the 35 watt HID for $12 bucks... now, don't you find it worth a lot more? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Surefire M6: $18 per hour per 500 lumens
35 watt HID 2D Mag mod, $12 per hour per 3200 lumens

Winner: 35 watt HID 2D Mag mod!

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

LOL!

Personally, I prefer "guilt free" rechargeable lumens. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

That's where JSB's rechargable lithium 123s come in, for a short 10 min run time, I think it should do just fine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Let's see, 2 x 3 x 150A = 3.8 volts (Average voltage throughout discharge) x 3 in 2 stacks = 11.4 volts x 3 amps (3 amps divided by 2 stacks) = guilt free lumens. $20 per batt x 6 batt = $120. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I like the idea of a shorter body /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

OK then Guys /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/poke2.gif

Who wants to build me one of these "35 watt HID 2D Mag" scorchers then /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Any takers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Any modders out there who want to make me one of these /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: 20,000 Lux in a 6.75 Inch Package !!

Psychomod,

Why don't you try asking Otokoyama/Ginseng in their Aurora TK thread. They are boring out Mag tubes. They are having nice chunky 3" reflectors which should easily make 100 K lux with a 35 watt package (Given that the 10 watt already makes a 50++K lux)
