Will a 3D M*G throw out to 40 - 60yds? I need something fairly cheap and if I lose it I won't freak. I will be using it to spot addresses from the street.

Thanks...

Upgrade it to a Luxeon 3 LED, and you will get 330 yards - easy.

Been there done it and it wasn't even running on all cylinders (750mA, whereas I designed it to run at 1.2A). Can't wait to see what it can do on FRESH cells!

BTW, it's fairly cheap, a TY0L Luxeon 3 from oeo2oo will be $16, and a Hotlips heatsink is going at $14. Nothing else needed except a little work on your part to modify it. You can run this config safely in direct drive, so no sophisticated electronics required.

If a 3D Mag will do it, then get a 4D, put in a 3cell Krypton bulb and enjoy the throw... I think the 4Ds are still on sale at lowes so they are cheaper than the 3D as well. The 4D definately outthrows the 3D and the 4D with the 3D Krypton bulb is noticably brighter and whiter than the 3D with 3D Xenon or the 4D with the 4D Xenon.

Buy a Princeton Tec Surge. $20-30. It runs off of 8 AA's putting out 6v at 7.5 watts. Waterproof. Semi-focus. 3 hour run time.
People around here love them or hate them.

How is the 4D with a Krypton bulb brighter than when using the 4 cell Xenon bulb? Just wondering....as I thought it was the other way around. I replaced my krpyton in my 3D with a Xenon and can notice the beam brighter, and whiter.

The 4D cells running a 3D bulb is overdriving the bulb.
Making the 3D bulb burn brighter than a 4D bulb.

My friend swiped the spare Krypton out of my Fulton 2D angle-head GI light and used it in his 3D Mag for a long time before I realized it.

Yeah, one of my car lights is a pewter 4D Mag with a Mag 3 cell Krypton bulb and a sputtered reflector and you know, if it wasn't for the good folks on this forum reassuring me otherwise, I'd swear it was almost a decent flashlight.

[My EDC (in my backpack) was a 4D mag that I had forEVER. A few too many trips down concrete steps (after YEARS AND YEARS of abuse), and it quit.]

I made a trip out to WallyWorld and they knocked about $4 off their price of their 4D M@G so I picked it up instead of the 3D which wasn't marked down. I also picked up a twin pack of bulbs the 3-Cell to run in this 4-Cell Light, it is pretty bright and I should be able to pick out street addresses from the street. I will later mod this light so I have a good host to go by...

Thanks for your inputs...

Not necessarily. There are plenty of Xenon/Halogen bulbs that will outthrow and outspill an Lux III.

The right combination of batteries and bulbs is all it takes.

The secrest is finding that combo.

When it flat out comes down to amount of light from a reasonable size, the incans still rule, though at a runtime premium.

would a 4D with different bulb options (3D, mag's special bulbs, etc) outthrow a lux III mod?

If you are getting a 4D M@g, perhaps you wanna try using four of those common DIY shop 2AA battery adapters to hold 8AAs and use a M@glite 6cell kryton bulb? This is a white hot overdrive and there are chances of flashing the bulb but you will love the results.

I had used a 6cell bulb with 8AAAs in a 4C M@g and the beam is whiter than my Surefires incandescents(P60, P90) and throws farther too. It's even whiter than my WA superbulb and nearly throws as far. The best part is that 4CM@g is only about half a inch longer than 3D, but much slimmer.

This will definitely out throws the Lux III mods. In fact incandescent bulbs are already at an advantage when it comes to output, throw and color rendition. Not to mention they perform better than LEDs in light polluted environment such as ambient city lights, or fog and rain. Like Bill had said, you just need the right battery and bulb combination to make them shine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So... is using 8 AA cells to drive a 6 cell Krypton bulb overdriving that bulb more than using 4 D cells to drive a 3 cell Krypton bulb? Assuming all standard Mag bulbs? I've been doing the latter for quite a while and have never really had issues with bulbs dying quickly.

But I do need to try the 2C to 3x123 mod sometime. Just need to get that PVC and the right bulb.
