Hello,
I have owned my flashlight for a few months now, and it is superb.
There are 2 issues though. The thread needs cleaning and new lube by now... which products would you recommend for this job?
Also the head seems to be too loose. However tight it is, gving it a jiggle - as in lateral pressure - will make it switch modes. This is not permanent... apply pressure, mode changes; release pressure, switches back. Is this a common thing for the Quark, or is mine defective?

As to the mode change problem, does this happen if you just move or shake your Quark? If this is the case, I would contact the folks at 4Sevens about it. My Quarks have never changed modes under those circumstances. If you have to push on the head to cause this to happen, I would just stop pushing on it & ignore it.

On the second point I was being stupid. It is in mode 2 (unscrewed) where it can be a little unpredictable. Its very rarely annoying though (only when doing the rapid switching to bring up the programming bit)
 
I use rubbing alcohol and old t shirts to clean mine, and Super-lube grease to lube em up and they work great. You shouldn't notice the mode switching if you loosen the head a little more. It is the nature of that type of light, you can see how the light works if you take the head off and examine it. There is a ring on the inside that makes contact with the end of the battery tube for the tighten mode, pressing on the head causes that ring to contact the tube. Loosening it another 1/4 turn or so will solve the problem.

Correct reply by Treek. I have the Mini 123 and noted that if you unscrew the head just a tiny bit you could still push against the head or press the head and body together and this will change the light mode. Threads cannot be exactly exactly the same on male and females becuase if they were they would not screw together easily. Threads have to have a little give or overseize on male and female to allow easy fitting. Sometimes an overally deep cut thread or if the tool that is used in maching the thread is not correct this can cause the threads to be oversize and cause a lot of play. I can pretty much assure you that the threads on probably every light their is is correct unless some machining or tool issue and therfore in short your light is perfectly fine. If the head wobbles then that is a differant story but as stated all threads have a little give. Simply ensure you undue the head a little more to prevent accidiental turn on. Oh and I simply use petroleum gel for oring lube. Works just fine for me.
 
I think the quality of the threading on Quarks has been discussed before, there quality seems to be hit and miss. The AA2 I had was very good. The (3) Mini 123s I purchased were so bad that that by switching the heads around I was able to build a light that could not be turned on! So much for interchangeable parts.

Try and see if you have the problem at all different point of unloosening the head, up to where you're just about to expose the o-ring. If the problem persists even when the head is very loose, it is defective.

I had exactly the same problem with a neutral white, low voltage Quark head I bought individually last fall for Legoing. I also could feel a distinct movement of something inside the head when it was loosened to the o-ring and I pressed on the bezel next to the glass. I emailed them about it, described the problem, and they gave me an RMA and said they'd check it out and let me know. I mailed it back to them on Monday, and I'm hoping to hear back about it sometime next week.
