At a thrift store I snagged a nice older Broadstone 4C LED lantern, although missing the lower battery contact plate, rendering it non-working (which is why it cost under $5).
I figured it could be fixed up, or used for spare parts as I already have identical one earlier also picked up on the cheap. This didn't happen, so it was converted to USB power. Small hole was drilled in the body, and the A end of a cheap USB cable run through and power wires soldered to the internal contacts.
Here's a shot of it running from a USB Li-ion pack.
USB voltage is somewhat below four fresh alkalines, but brightness is OK.
