Here's a little creation made from a Brinkmann Legend 1AAA that's had a few turns in the lathe.
The Tiny-Illuminator:
The head on this flashlight is actually the ring from a D cell Maglite bulb socket. 13.4mm mineral glass protects the LED from the outside world.
The body of the AAA light was not large enough in diameter to turn threads for the bulb socket ring. To make this possible, I bored a bulb socket to 15/32" and trimmed off the section with the threads I needed. I then turned the AAA body to just under for a press fit. This allowed the threads to be slightly larger than the body.
Power is supplied by 5 L1154 cells (removed from Key-Mates). The photon pump is an 8mm four die LED from Mark Hanna (Quikar). This 8mm four die LED is constructed similar to the 5 watt Luxeon, but using four LED dies like found in 5mm LEDs. It will kick the snot out of any 5mm LED made hands down; lots of light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The LED is mounted on a simple circuit card; top negative contact, bottom positive contact. It can be easily swapped for another similar setup with colored 8mm LEDs. An o-ring on the LED keeps it centered in the flashlight. This makes for a prety bright little pocket screamer that will run for hours on the 5 cells. The clickie tail cap switch allows one handed on/off operation.
Shown above next to a Mag Solitaire for size comparison, this flashlight isn't too big, but still big enough to be easily handled.
