Lumileds has something like this, but they designed the input voltage to be in the 18-20v range; would have been nicer if it was 12v range
 
heh, 2,000 lumens each of tail lights shining back at you! That'd be quite the ticket for tailgaiters!!!
 
Actually 39 elements for $160 is about $4 each. If you are looking for total led light output this is interesting. I remember when they first introduced the product, they are supposed to have a much better thermal interface to the LED. The equivalent of Silicon on Copper instead of Silicon on Insulator.

Mouser has a huge inventory, but their prices are equally huge.

I will wait until the gizmos trickle down to the cheaper sellers.
