6 Volt Lantern Battery

Hello guys/gals,

I feel like a tool. I just went out to buy some lantern batteries for my 15 year old fish finder and I bought 'Heavy Duty' 6v Rayovacs. Thinking hey, this battery is for big boys with heavy duty applications ;)
I should have known better, there's no expiry date or any other useful information.

A quick internet search and 'Heavy Duty' come up as zinc-chloride. Woops, vastly reduced capacity and shelf-life.
I think I was going under the assumption that if it's not a rechargeable chemistry, then every consumer battery out there these days is alkaline. Woe is me.

Haha, anyway...word to the wise, I won't be fooled again!

Alkaline cells in that size are extremely rare. I suggest a 6v Lead-Acid retrofit, or a NiCd or other rechargeable to hold voltage high enough. Capacity will be less at medium current draws, but it can recharge. I know Rayovac has some lead-acid cells at 6v.

batteryjunction.com sells rayovac alkaline f-cell( the heavy long-lasting ones) 6v lantern batteries. I keep a bunch around for my older lanterns that i modded, they are top notch and have a long shelf life. i also have 4-d cell to 6volt lantern adapters that i use with NI-MH d cells for everyday use
