6AA to 2D adapter

[Let It Bleed]

I want to be able to use 6 AA batteries in a 2D Maglite. Are these made anymore? Everywhere I've looked they have been discontinued. If I happen to find 3AA to D adapters, can they be used in series?

Although I plan to use the light primarily with 2 Li-ion batteries, I'd like to have the option of using AA batteries also.
