6volt lantern adapter

Is there any advantage to maybe cost or availability, by converting a 6 volt lantern style battery, to a 4 Dcell type? I saw an adapter at the hardware store, so i was curious.

Battery availability is one good one. Also you can use rechargeables in the adapter.
