If they succeed then the same LED out to be good for ~100 lm/W at a 25W power level. In other words the output of a 150W incandescent while using 1/6 the power.

Two of those at full power would light up my workroom as brightly as it's lit now. :rock:
 
It looks like a luxeon star! lol. I wonder what the actual size is on that. Looks multi die. Looks like the emitter could be removed from the star as well. Imagine the latern you could mod with this!
 
I thought the Surefire DARPA series was employing similar technology in their prototypes made by Luxeon.

There are some pictures floating around with PK holding a working prototype of a 100W LED flashlight. It looks like it's suppose to compete with HID lights at a similar size. I speculated that the LED could be running at the ~40-70lm/w level already.

Any insight on this? It appears that these type of LEDs are already a reality.
 
I magnified the picture and did some image filtering and counted a 5x5 or 6x6 emitter layout. If 6x6 is correct then that means that it is 3W emitters. Each would produce close to 200 lumens, I would be very happy getting only one of those emitters.

I assume you are referring to SAIC light that Surefire produced for them under the DARPA program. As I recall from the pictures, that was only a 10W LED light.

Wrong light on that site, newbie, the pictures floating around they're reffering to shows PK holding the light, it's bezel aimed toward the ceiling, and the hotspot looks like its even brighter than the LIGHT BULB in the ceiling, and was specifically said to be a 100W (One Hundred Watt) LED Flashlight. Someone said it looked it like was diamond-studded, but they were bolts on the case.

Nope. It is all about who gets it to market first.
 
Looking closely at the article, they haven't actually built anything. This is a statement of what they would like to build, someday, if they can. I also have to wonder if that LED in the photo requires active cooling when it is on?

It would probably depend on the size of the heatsink they mounted it to, the orientation, and the surrounding environment.

To me, the article seemed more that they wanted to develop it to a production state, with the listed goals, based on the prototype in the picture.

The new Intematix phosphors should definitely help them get to the 70lm/W numbers. Various LED companies from all over the world have been signing agreements with Intematix...

Toss in the recent die improvements, and die surface treatments, and other light extraction techniques that have been proven in various companies labs, it will be exciting to see what happens when it all makes it to the market.

Well, if the course holds par for LumiLEDs, we will not see a LumiLEDs 100W LED for at least five years.

They do a demo, and five years later, you might see it on the market...

Which reminds me, what happened to LumiLEDs 1000 lumen LED that they showed a few years ago?
