A \'Candlepower Brand\' laser? Corection \'Users\'

I was thinking..(that in itelf is a shock!)
It seems that the possibility of green lasers becoming very rare is comming.
Is anyone interested in pooling resources to come up with sources for parts(diodes crystals lenses etc.)and finding a cheap and easy way of making a laser with modest power, for others with interest?
I dont think these parts will be regulated like pointers might.

I noticed if someone buys a laser that is premade and readly available they tend to be careless with it.
But build your own and you will take much more care with something that is your own creation.

I love experimenting, and things with a high 'Gee whizz' factor facinate me.
I have been called "Dr.Frankenstein" buy some friends.
But they always say I wish I could make something like that.

Size: Smaller than a pencil eraser
Power: 400 mW

a laser with that much power would sell for 1000 dollars or so...kinda out of the goof off market.

A 400mw diode would only produce a laser between 20-40mw (At less than optimal current draw), up to between 50-80mw. At the moment, the most sensible option would be a 350mw 5.6mm diode.. You'd be looking at production costs of between 60-100$, I think.. If you're really interested, contact me at [email protected]

I'd be up for such a project. One similar project was mentioned in an earlier thread.

If someone cared to come up with a 'kit', i'd happily invest.

I was not set on a certain power level, although I personally would like to try for something in the 70mW range.
I was hoping to find people who have connections,sources or experience to fabricate something reasonable.

Electronic circuity is my specialty.
building a driver board, for the laser anyways is a piece of cake.

I would like to know everyones suggestions on a acheiveable power level, portable or not, temp stablization, mechanical fabrication or any other conciderations.

My main interest at this point is what is practical?

Back on topic, what do you mean by smaller than a pencil eraser? (do you mean size of leadlight?)
I have a modified pointer that outputs 80mW+ but the duty cycle of that thing is something like 10secs max followed by at least twice that much off time for cooling...
I agree that the driver part isn't hard but keeping the diode cool, the mca warm (but not hot) and all that in the form of a "pencil eraser", power supply included, isn't. So to answer your question, nope I don't think practical is the right word.
Sometime ago, I saw someone who made a 300mW laser module portable; the thing was half the size of a vcr...

I have no set "specs" as of now..

I am interested in seeing what is available to make something "hobbyist grade"

Yea..that's a great idea! How about forming a talented team of experts and try to create the ultimate laser pen ever devised by mankind. 80Mw or 100Mw range. Higher is always better. Maybe we can spark interest in the CPF Community for a group buy. If this goes through I'm for one.
