During a conversation today with my Economics professor somehow the topic swirled from Potential GDP to income taxes to CPIs to Obama to Accounting to...Bicycle experiences.

Turns out what he has to work with ["a small lamp"] he has to dodge opossums near the woods, old lady on walkers around wally, and people who "walk around with an expression like deer in headlights." Feeling compelled to try and help him out with some ill-devised illumination, I came up here and risking my waffles and asking a stupid question [in the great scheme of things today hopefully I'm in the right subforum].

Objective: To locate and secure a bike lamp that can be handled and operated by a nonflashaholic and to operate efficiently

Design Criteria:
Moderately shock resistant
Weather resistant
No fancy colors
2 modes maximum
Alkaline cells
No PR lamp, No 5mm LEDs either, anything else = good
~1-2 Hour runtime, but thats a guess
Good throw [mainly to identify old ladies on walkers, the local fruit from the telephone pole, and on site identification for avoiding opossums.

Cost:
<$100, Anything above $50 I'll be giving it to him as a gift, of 15 years being in school hes the first "fun" Economics teacher I have ever met.:D
[<$100 is an estimated budget, I have $13.44 cash to work with at the moment...there might be a $20 under the bed, I don't know for sure]

Alternatives:
If you have a Luxeon bike lamp you've made back when Luxeons are still hot, depending on the type and modding possibility, I will pay any reasonable price to buy it from you. under the assumption that its all in one piece [if its for me, I'd prefer a huge NiMH battery pack jerked behind it like a colostomy bag] for this is going to be used by a 50ish man with gray hair that still uses his typewriter even when hes wearing his Compaq company shirt.

TIA

I'd go with with the fenix mount and any spare AA based light you care to give the guy.

I forgot about the LxTs...:shakehead
Anyone have a used one they don't want or would like to sell?
I could buy a new one...sure, but I'd prefer something used...I'm just that kinda person when it comes to flashlights

From your requirements, I'm dithering between a (any) 2 AA light + lockblock and a small, simple hub generator setup. AA + lockblock might be cheaper for the setup (depending on the flashlight), hub generator setup would still fit into your budget (better, if you're prepared to do some of the mechanical work by yourself).

From what I can see from your description, I'm not sure if your prof is the kind of guy who remembers to change (let alone charge) batteries and carry spares. All that battery (and mounting and unmounting) hassle is gone if you go for a generator light.

A simple setup would use a low-end shimano hub generator or (preferrably) the SRAM or Sanyo generator (sealed bearings as opposed to cone bearings) and a b&m LED headlight (CYO for preference, but that would blow your budget).

I just checked the b&m site (www.bumm.de): they also carry a decent headlight for rechargeable batteries, the IXON IQ (http://www.bumm.de/docu/192q-e.htm), that could still be within your budget (prices in USD should be similar to end user prices in Euros, the exchange rate more or less compensates for the VAT).

Bye

I second the idea of a 2xAA light with more than one brightness level I don't think strobe would be unwelcome either. Probably the simpler the UI, the better in this case.

yeah, I can recommend one to him, but yeah...batteries is going to be a long term issue if that was the case. If he can remember to buy CR123As online I might get him an E1L or something with Über-long runtimes and in single cell configuration so that there will be no mismatch of capacity:ohgeez:

Now if he lives close by I can at least acquire a dynamo and install it for him....
