While my wife was reading the 911 report, she turned to me and said that one reason some people escaped was because a person had a flashlight (see page 294). Going down dark stairs with lots of junk all over providing a trip hazard, it sure makes sense to me. The next day I bought my Arc-AAA. This is the first flashlight I have owned that casts a strong light yet easily fits in my pocket. Having it with me all of the time is what makes it so useful. I have a Mini-Mag in my car which I rarely carry on me. I am very careful with my money and got sticker shock when I saw the Arc-AAA's price tag. However, the quality and size quickly won me over. If this flashlight was stolen (by my wife), I would not hesitate to buy another right away.

Welcome to CPF and congratulations on having discovered the true meaning of "EDC"!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

EDC refers to Every Day Carry, which is the concept of having a light on your person at all times. The point being, if the light is not with you, you won't use it. Every time I pull out my EDC light I realize that if I didn't have it, and had to walk all the way back to the carpark to get a light, I'd rather work without the light. Sometimes it may not even be possible for me to retrieve it, so there's no choice. You can't predict when you will need a light any more than you can predict which numbers will win the lottery (I'd like to see someone do it, then I'd ask them for the numbers I need to buy... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif)

Yup, EDC - that light is certainly now a useful tool and not a toy. I also carry a Palm Pilot which is filled with lots of data that I occasionally use plus enough books to keep me busy for hours (including the 911 report).

I've seen several reports of disaster situations where there were no working lights, and the emergency lights over the exits were obsucred by smoke or dust.


There was one stoty of a group in a tall building that followed the glow from a guy's wrist watch backlight (EL) down the fire escape in a blackout.

When there is no competing light source, a single LED can seem very bright.

That is one powerful watch /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif you're right, a single 5mm LED can really throw a lot of light in total darkness, just try it in the bathroom at night.

Still, I'm firstly hoping I never end up in such a situation (I'm sure all of us would rather not), but if I am, may the P60 lamp lend me some SERIOUS lighting power /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif

Why not buy another and give it to your wife? God forbid, but one day she might find herself in a position where she'll need it.

She tells me she is happy with the Mini-Mag I gave her. After 29 years of marrage, I know when NOT to give a gift. Now, if it had a few diamonds stuck on it, she might reconsider ;-0

Maybe just an inexpensive single LED for her keychain? I EDC the AAA Arc also but I can see the value of a lesser LED. Someone gave me an aluminum LED coin cell recently. It was supposed to be in jest but I like it. Looks like a little flying saucer and it came with swivel clip. I clipped it to the zipper to the most used compartment on my carry all. Now I can find the compartment easily in the dark by touch, open it and have immediate light at the same time...all with one hand.

They said it was a couple of bucks at Walgreens.

And she'll never notice until she turns it on and.. sees the light /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's a reversable upgrade, if you keep the stock switch assembly, bulb and reflector you can still put it back in.
