I was looking at the surefire website and the specs for the L2. It says in high mode it is 100 lumens. It apears to be the same head that is used on others rated at 65. Is the 100 a mistake or am I missing something?

The L2's bezel is not the same as the KL4 bezel:

When i called to ask question's about my E2d, i inquired about the L2 for maybe a next light. since there was a thread going on about this very subject i asked the tech, and he said it was indeed 100 lumen's. VDG

Well... they are both LuxV right? But the KL4 is severely underpowered with a drive current of only 600mA or something. And LuxV are supposed to deliver 120 lumens at nominal, ie 750mA. So...?

keep this in mind, stellwolf. that 65 lumens rating is the lower bound. SF is known to have a tendency to be on the conservative side. but yeah, i believe the KL4 is underdriven at 667 mA or so. dunno though on the L2. probably at full current? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

If the KL4 is underdriven would it be safe to run the KL4 on three cr123 batteries?

The circuit in a KL4 is purely boost, unlike the KL1 which is buck/boost. So don't ever load up more than 2 CR123. But less is ok and the KL4 circuit will operate down to (IIRC) 2V, which is pretty much dead for a CR123.

Lots of people hook up their KL4 head to a E1 body (1 CR123) and the configuration is called the TW4. Depending on the Luxeon lottery (one of the variables being the actual Vf of the LED in use) you can have a little disappointing to fairly impressive results. The runtime is naturally shorter, the LED is not in regulation for most of the run, and it starts out a little bit dimmer than if run on 2 CR123. But people do it because the size is now equivalent to a KL1 but way brighter.
