Would it be possible to stuff an aircraft landing light in a THOR? The large THOR not the smaller one. Just a crazy idea I had. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

A 35/50 watt HID mod should be enough
for almost all purposes.
And power supply is easier for them too.
 
I would think just about anything will fit in the THOR.
Yes, a HID system would be the best, but you may be asking about teh aircraft light, cuz you already have one, or can get one cheap.

What wattage is it?
If its not much more than 100W, the THOR should handle the heat just fine.
 
Depending on the "par" size of the bulb, yes, but the landing lights already have their own reflector (so it would be a lot of monkeying around to get to all fit). The large 64 pars will not fit. The 100 watt aircraft landing lights really aren't much better than the vector lights, maybe the HIR (halogen infrared) bulbs may be a bit better, but they won't be as good as the 35 watt HID.

You have to get into the 250 watt range before you see a noticeable difference in output and then the poor "little" Thor will have it's runtime reduced to 15 minutes.
 
My friend had a 250 watt one he said I could have , but if it only gets 15 minutes of runtime then I'm not worrying about it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Hey lasercrazy, I modded a Maglite 3 D-cell with a new machined head to hold a 4559X GE landing light. It starts out at 670W on a custom battery pack. Estimated lumens= 10,000! Only 8 minutes on the run time.

That must be one nice battery pack. Good to hear someone else is playing with the 4559X. Puts out a nice bit of light.

Sorry, the 4559 par 64 landing lights would fit in a Thor. May not look pretty, but it would fit. The 4559 is only 600 watts, GE also makes a 1,000 watt bulb. Runtime, obviously, measured in a few short minutes.

I still want to see the battery pack that fits in a 3D that puts out 600 watts! It's incredible, over 20 amps at 24 volts.

My first test battery pack is assembled with 25 Sanyo 4000mAh "D" size NiCd batteries. They are the model N-4000DRL to be exact. I use a Smart Charger from SR Battery to charge it.

Starting out, fully charged (36V) under load from the GE 4559X lamp it measures 670 plus watts measured with a Super Whatt meter from Astro Flight.

I have the battery in a fanny pack worn around back. Astro Flights Super Flex 13 gage wire with Zero Loss 60 amp connectors connect the wiring harness from the battery to the Super Whatt meter. From here it connects to the the tail cap of the Mag-lite. I machined a hole in the tail cap and mounted the 25 amp Cinch twist-loc connector. This way I can disconnect the battery pack from the flashlight. I used a relay so I am able to use the stock Mag-lite switch.

The lamp is housed in a 8.5 inch diameter aluminum head. This was custom machined from a solid block of 6061 T6. On a full run of 8 minutes this head becomes rather warm to say the least! The head threads on to the Mag 3 D-cell tube as the original did. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did kind of drop out of sight, didn't I, on this one...sorry. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif After completing a working light I played with it for a while and decided I wanted to cut the cord to the battery pack. I put some research time in over the next several months to build a small & lighter battery pack using the Kokam Li-poly cells. This pack had to be small enough to fit in a new custom machined handle, a little larger than the Mag-lite 3 D-Cell one. It still needed to have the capacity to run the lamp for several minutes to make it worth while. During this time (several months ago) it was decided to wait until the Li-poly cell technology matured. Now there are newer cells which can take a higher sustained current but I haven't really looked into it lately. I'll come back to this project and finish it off someday.
