A10, Olight M21, or D-Mini Ultra?

Hi,


I'm looking for a light that will put the most light on an object 200 metres away and uses a single 18650 battery (a 2x CR123 option is good too).

Reading here I was thinking one of these three...

A10, Olight M21, and the D-Mini Ultra (no 2 x CR123 option, but 500 lumans from a single RCR123?!!).

Can someone help me make my mind up? (buying all three would be nice, but not an option just now sorry).

Which would light up something 200 metres away the best? I have a Tiablo A8 which will throw that far, but I'm sure the new lights will show a noticable inprovement over it?

I'm very interested in the D-mini VX Ultra. One thing to note is that it is 500 lumens with an 18650...Matt (Battery Junction) mentioned that he would post later the stats with RCR123...but in any case it seems like a great light!

Well I'd only expect it to last about 5 minutes but it would sure impress the peasants!

I would get yourself a collimator head for your A8 if you want throw to 200 metres and beyond.
Yes you only get a square of bright light with no spill, but at these ranges it covers an area of 10 metres squared or more, I can't remember the exact figure.

All for a few bucks!

Out of the ones you listed, definately the A10. The M21 does not throw very well. It is a flood type beam. The D-Mini is very bright for its size, but the small reflector limits its throw.

I suspected the A10 would be the better thrower, though would it be much better than my A8?

Steve, I've seen those heads.. I'm not sure I could get my head around a square spot though.

If it's throw you want in an 1 x 18650 light I'd suggest an XP-E based light. You won't get 4-700 lumens but you will get throw.

Take a look at the LumaPower MRV SK V1.1 - it's got great throw and is a great value as well for a top quality light. Probably 10-15% less throw than the A10 and like 40% cheaper - just as bright BTW - just slightly less throw because the reflector is smaller.

The A8 puts out about 20,000 lux vs. the A10 with about 38,000 lux.
It's almost double.

It really is nice to have the option to turn your A8 into a mega thrower with just a change of the head.
I agree the square hot spot is near useless at ranges below 50 yards or less but above this it really is amazing and just cuts through the dark and lights up objects at ranges that I thought impossible for such a small light:cool:

As for the A10, how many yards of extra throw will you get for the amount of money you will have to spend on a new light, 10, 20 30 yards?
I know it's nice to look forward to getting a new light, but unless something new comes out that seriously out performs the A10 I personally would not bother and just get the collimator until something better comes along.

lol that pretty much hits the nail on the head.. I'd like a new thrower that blows away my A8, and since they don't exist yet I shouldn't buy anything.. but suffer from the same affliction as many here. Want > need.

Then again Chafe says the lux rating of the A10 is nearly double that of my A8.... even I would notice that difference ;)

The main thing is not that I want more throw as I'm only wanting to reach 200 metres (yards), what I want is the most light I can put on something at 200 metres.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The A10 info is especially tempting even if I don't NEED the light lol.

If you are looking for something that will walk all over a A8,9 or 10 there isn't really anything yet in a LED, unless you want to go with a aspheric head or a DEFT, but these both have big drawbacks. Maybe you need to think of non LED lights. Some suggestions are a Stanley HID from Walmart. It is $70 and has some amazing output for its price. But it's a bit large. If you are handy at modding, they make a cool little project: warmer bulbs, battery packs, etc.

Also, I just put together a MagCharger 85. Run time is only about 30 minutes, no regulation, big, but it throws out a ton of warm light. Not the most useful light because of the runtime and lack of regulation, but that first 10 minutes is flashaholic bliss..

There are some really great smaller HID's, but they are really expensive.
Take a peak over in the incandescent forum. You can put together a Mag 85 for around $100-$150. Fivemega has sales threads with everything you would need.

Take a look at the Thrunite Catapult.
Uses SST 50, Puts out 650 lumens, 31240 Lux and reflector is designed to throw. Uses 1 or 2 18650's. I am currently compairing this light against the A10-G and both seem to be great lights so I'm still on the fence about this one.

Thanks, I do have two Power on Board HIDs which are fantastic for the price, but don't quite fit in my pocket (hence the single 18650 requirement). And yeah I've looked at the semi pocketable HIDs but my flashaholic insanity hasn't quite progressed that far yet and thus I still share my disposable income with other interests / hobbies.

570 OTF with one 18650 and 650 OTF with two 18650's
