AA LED selection ?

After selling off a few of my lights and 'reassigning' others I find I 'need' a Haiku AA !

I'm torn between either XM-L or Hi CRI LEDs

I'd be interested to hear any owners descriptions of the beams and views on the merits of the two LEDs especially if you own both.

My personal favorite LE of all is the original Nichia 119 (not the 119V).

Short version is that XM-L is floody, cool tint, and more lumens; Nichia are balanced (not really throwy), warm-neutral (and better color rendering), and less powerful.

My first McGizmo was the Haiku 3S XM-L. Very useful floody beam with some punch on H. The beam is beautiful even if cool. Mostly run it with 16340 li-ions. A great light for general use.

I recently got the AA Haiku with the Nichia 119V. Although not as bright, the beam has relatively more throw - relatively being the key word. I like the tint (a touch rosey). I'm using an Energizer L91 lithium and it is a winner. Have not done a runtime test, but it is efficient. I like the AA pak a lot and may get one for the 3S XM-L and use a 14500 li-ion. Might be a bit hard to tell them apart.

I like the AA Haiku hi cri, but I find the 3S XM-L more useful. Depends on what your needs are.

I had no idea there was a 119/119v choice. What is the difference between the two?? :o

I believe the McGizmo thread on hi cri discusses the differences in more detail. The v is more rose colored. The tint is very nice.

Hi,

I have a 3S Haiku XM-L (123 pak) and love it! It is quite floody so it's great for close illumination tasks. As said above, it does pack a good punch though on high.
I've recently purchased the 2xAA pak to go with it to give me different battery options and it also totally changes the feel of the light. Better to hold with gloves etc.

I don't have a McGizmo Hi CRI light but I do have a L3 Illumination L10 Nichia 219 Hi CRI light. Great, Great tint and such a bargain if you want to `dip your toes' into Hi CRI lights.
I know that everyone loves the McGizmo 119 but for me, I would not be satisfied with the lower output.

I get a real buzz planning my next purchase!!

It depends on your needs and whether you are a tint snob or not, but the Haiku 3S XM-L is my go to light. The smooth floody beam is wonderful and the tint is cool but not purple or green. It is perfect for walking the dog at night, finding things in the basement, etc.

I like the AA Haiku 119v a lot, but it has not dethroned the 3S XM-L. I don't have an AA Haiku XM-L or a 3S Nichia to compare to so it is a bit of apples and oranges.

I also have an L3 Illumination L10 Nichia 219. Great value light. The relevant point is that the tint of the 119v is more rose compared to the 219, which is a pure white. And the 119v has a little more throw.

Graham. If you are after flood, go with the Haiku XML. If you need to go a bit further with the beam, use the 119V in a reflectored Haiku head.

I am interested in this too. Contemplating getting first McGizmo in AA
as far as I understand XML will be brighter & floody whereas Hi CRI will be throwier and a bit dimmer...correct?
will both LEDs run 14500s?

You will run either 14500's or AA...not both.

You must choose the 3V LE to run 14500, of course.

Edited to say this is not entirely true. You can indeed use 14500's in the combo with the AA converter. Sorry about that.

In addition to the emitter (Nichia or XM-L), you need to consider the light engine (AA, 3S or 6V) and head (mule, Haiku or Makai). Then pick the apprpriate pak (AA, 2xAA, 123, or 2x123). And then use the right cell. If I remember correctly, the AA LE is 300 mA on high, the 3s is 600 mA and the 6v is 1400 or 1200 mA. Check the threads.
