i've been fascinated with flashlights for a long time, and i just built my first p60 dropin. it works great but doesn't fit my host. which is why im going to try and get some definitive answers on some questions before i continue my quest. please bear with me because i know these questions have been asked, but i can't seem to find answers that satisfy my need for complete understanding. i've purchased some build parts from various vendors that are frequently mentioned in this forum. im trying to piece together these parts to make any kind of drop in that i can be proud of. this leads me to my questions.
i purchased an indus star xpg from led supply. they spec this 3 led star with a forward voltage of 9v at 350 mA.
1). from what i have gathered i need a driver that is capable of an input of at least 9v and preferably greater?
2) if i feed this star with less than 9v it won't work or won't work efficiently?
basically what i would like to do is run this star at or near its potential in a surefire 6p. i have the resources available to machine pieces to make this work, but i lack the knowledge on component selection.
please correct me if i describe something incorrectly in my following statements. the indus start that i speak of has 3 series wired xpg leds. these leds in series have a forward voltage of 9v at 350mA. if i break off the zero ohm jumpers on the star then the individual leds will have a forward voltage of 3v.
?3) how does one determine the type of driver based on a single leds forward voltage? is there some sort of headroom measurement? what im asking is what voltage will the led work at, and also what will it work at efficiently.
