I was intrigued by this watch. When my body allows me to I like to walk, run, hike and bike and I thought this would be a neat item to have. However I'm not so keen about having a GPS strapped to my arm. I wonder if you could attach it to your belt? Too bad they couldn't put the GPS functions inside the watch.

That is a very nifty gadget, and a good training aid. I just quit smoking and I intend to begin an exercise program any day now. I have seen enough cIips showing President Bush running and was interested in his, uh, runtime. I found this online... "Four times a week, he runs three miles, at a pace of between 6 minutes, 45 seconds to 7 minutes, 30 seconds per mile." That sounds pretty respectable to me. Since he is 11 years older, being a good Liberal I figure I should be able to match or better his pace. Something to shoot for anyway. This watch would be great for that and for anyone that runs or bikes regularly. The transceiver does have a belt clip by the way and takes 3 AAA batteries that they say last around 12 hours. The watch will always be accurate too as the satellites transmit the time from an atomic clock. Pretty neat. Thanks for the link.

That is a pretty good pace for the prez. I'm sure I don't do any better. I just try to burn fat and suck wind a little (39 years old). Concerning the watch, I'm going to try to investigate to see if their are user reviews to see how well it actually performs before I plunk down my $200. Also, not being a GPS expert, don't regular GPS's already do those functions like distance, speed, average speed, etc? True you won't get the handy transmission of data to the watch but you would gain the mapping functions/tracking of the GPS.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Casio did for $500.00. Garmin Etrex no frills model is only $115.00 on Amazon, and it is only 2"x4"x1 1/2". Comes with a bike mount and wrist strap but I don't know if it would work well (reception) inside a case or carrying it (while running) in your hand. It appears to perform same functions plus mapping.Timex should have just put an MP3 player inside the transceiver as well. Everybody around here has one strapped on their upper arm.

I am actually thinking about getting one. The watch can be worn by itself... I mean after all, it's for my health... And look at all the money I am saving by not smoking.

Found it here for $184.00 including shipping. Check model #.

Go get it. You deserve it for not smoking. I think I will eventually get the watch or a GPS. I'm going to do some more GPS research.

Just seems like a bit of a waste of GPS technology, since it doesn't report position information, but only uses it for speed and delta distance information. I would think a regular pedometer (or cyclometer for bike) would serve sufficiently for that purpose.
Definitely better off with a real GPS unit, I would think-

Great watch for use in adventure racing. Since we are generally not allowed, except for emergency back-up (use it and your are out of the race) to use GPS, the watch circumvents that rule. It only gives distance, not position, so it is legal. One can navigate well if you accurately now how far you have gone which can be a problem at night.
Have used the E-Trex (Summit model) extensively when running, cycling, kayaking, horse riding. There are better units now available with downloadable date etc. but it is an excellent unit.
