My Casio died the other day and a battery swap didn't cure it. So I'm on the look for a replacement. Unfortunately, my desires and what is reasonably practical are at odds. ;)

I had liked the Marathon TSAR but at $450, it is pushing it. Any suggestions for a comparable styled watch at a lower price point? The other I like is a Seiko diver SKX009J like this one:

Budget sub $300 with $200 being the comfort zone.

I have a very similar watch to the one that you have provided the link for...

Here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LATEST-SEIKO-...14&_trkparms=72:1298|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
is a link to the type of watch that I have (I always prefer metal straps over rubber, personal choice thing).

It's been a very good watch, and I like the day/date feature, something I generally look for in a mechanical watch. Mine gains a little more than it should, so I might open it up and correct that, but yes, good watch.

Seiko is a well-respected brand with excellent cost - quality ratio.

You seem to have found what you wanted..... Ironically, so did I; just a handful of hours ago. I've been looking for the ideal watch, for me, for quite awhile. A few years in fact. Just couldn't seem to find the right one.

Then I found a Pulsar PXH227 model. Not too expensive, and has nearly all the features I've been looking for. (It has enough of them that I decided to buy the watch). Ironically, many of the features I prefer on a good watch are usually found on the cheaper models. Which actually isn't good.... Tough to find a well-made watch that incorporates all the features generally associated with cheap watches.

I don't like bands made out of metal. (Don't fit tight enough on my wrist).

Hate automatic movement. (Had a Hamilton once that couldn't keep accurate time because I didn't wear it long enough on a daily basis).

Don't like chronographs. (Never going to use those complications, and they just end up cluttering up the face).

Higher-end watches with black faces tend to have thin, silver, hands. (Prefer white hands since they stand out better against the black face).

But all of the above is just based on what I personally prefer on a watch.

Just prefer features found on cheap watches. Bit hard to get them on watches that exhibit a bit more quality. True, no one will mistake Pulsar for a luxury brand, like Rolex. But certainly better quality than something sold by street vendors. (The boxes will probably last longer than the watches they're sold in).

Here's a pic of the Pulsar I purchased:

first of all, your casio *may* not be dead. Did you do a AC (All Clear) after the battery change? you should try it if you haven't done so. AC *might* bring it back to life. :-)

(AC All Clear -- short out the AC metal contact with the +ve node of the battery to reset the watch)

if you are movement up the market, you can also consider Seiko 200m kinetic SKA371P1, its a great movement 5M62 with up to 6 months of power reserve. its a quartz so it will be tougher than a mechanical watch. also great seiko lume as well.

if you can tell us what you want from the watch, then maybe we can better narrow down suggests

I've been wandering that auction site and online watch shops. The choices are dizzying to say the least. What I thought was a done deal...changed. I was planning on that Sekio SKX 009J but then the Kinetic version popped in. When I showed the Mrs. the choices...she said the Casio looked like those...try something different. We stopped by a watch shop and she asked me to try on this one:

At $775, it was way out of my mind. Afterwards she asked me what I thought of the watch...yeah I did like it, but... She had this big grin...would you like that for X-mas?

This was one of the others she also liked.

So it seems she's upped the game for me. :)
