Ansmann 2500 LSD Test

I received eight Ansmann 2500 LSD batteries from Thomas Distributing on the evening of the 19th. Four were placed in the Maha C9000 on "Break-in" mode. They were done when I got home this afternoon. Below are the available capacities shown on the C9000.

1. 2303
2. 2295
3. 2277
4. 2318

Thinking forum members might be interested in the capacity right out of the package I put the final four in the C9000 and performed a "Discharge" at 700ma. The stated capacities were:

5. 1182
6. 1196
7. 1180
8. 1157

I presently have 5-8 charging on the Eneloop charger and 1-4 are now being discharged on the C9000. I will edit this post with capacity figures when they are complete. We will see how close they are to the "Break-in" capacities.

Looks like batteries 5-8 had about 50 percent capacity right out of the package. Seems a little low and I could not find a date on the package or the batteries so have no idea how long they have been setting around. The package and the batteries do say made in China. I may set four of these aside and see how two of them test in three months and then test two in 6 months.
 
IMHO, there's a kind of rule of thumb about LSD batteries, which is that the optimum capacity is 2000 mAh, give or take. If you try to increase capacity much beyond that there will be a price to pay, which means for instance increased self-discharge, higher internal resistance, shorter cycle life, less durability. You have to be realistic about this. The size of an AA shell is fixed, which means if you squeeze more of "something" inside it, there will be less room for "something else".
 
Hows the Maxe+ written on the cells, the "e" is green in 2500mAh cells and golden in 2100mAh cells, right?

It seems to me that this pretty much applies to non LSD NiMH cells as well. Most 2000mAh, or lower capacity standard NiMH cells, seem to actually have fairly low self discharge. They aren't as good as LSD cells, but much better than the high cap versions.

Edit: Hey Egsise, how are your temperatures up there? Any -40 yet?

It has been around -30°C(-25°F) for some weeks, but nothing really cold.

Nothing really cold, eh? :crackup:

Here in SW Ohio, we've only been to about 4F this Winter. Usually we have a few days with lows around 0F, or a little below. The record locally, was -26F back in I believe, 1977, or 1978. Right here though, we had -32F. Good for drinking hot buttered rums, but that was about it! :)

I've allways wanted to experience -40, because when somebody asks you "Was that F, or C?", it doesn't make any difference. It's just plain COLD! :)

Sorry for going OT, but just checking on Egsise, up there in N. Finland. :thumbsup:
