Anybody use Basic Stamps? NEWS!

Hello out there again.. Don't know how many folks out there use Stamps (Parallax.com) for anything, tho I know I've always found them to be great for tweaking LEDs in cool ways..

Anyhow, I was sniffing the Parallax website last week, and spotted a great item for any of you old Stamp I hackers..

They've finally made an adaptor and software to allow you to use the Stamp I with any Winbox with a serial port! No more incompatible printer port issues. And the adaptor sells for.... $4.95!!

I've been keeping a 486 laptop just to deal with my Stamps at work and play... Now I can update... Sweeeet!

Well, for the price of that $4.95, I could buy a good many really cheap leds... I just cut open a serial adaptor from a computer case that was handy and used it to do my programming.

I would really (if you can figure out the programming issue) recommend the PICmicro set of microcontrollers from microchip ( http://microchip.com/1010/search/sitemap/submaps/picmicro/index.htm ), along with the JAL lanugage ( http://www.voti.nl/jal/ ). It's not QUITE so easy right off the bat, but ends up being much cheaper in the long run. You can afford to put the things ANYWHERE, when they only cost $3 bucks... the stamps are nearly $50, if I recall, so PICs might be worth the investment...

But it's all a matter of personal taste, though, so please, let's not start a religeous war... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love pics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I've got them driving hundreds of LEDs. The Ubicom SX series of chips are even better--much faster.

Stamps are great but expensive, more a fan of using a high level language compiler for progamming PIC/AVR/Scenix/8051 etc.

Would not reccomend crownhill`s Picbasic Proton for the Pic, the compiler is adequate. The customer service, and end user support is utterley appalling.

Subject to the limitations of compiled code,pay people to code, if things need to process quickly. Compilers by nature can generate certain amount of bloatware.
