Funny you should mention it; I pick mine (.40) up next Monday. Can't wait!

I've shot the 4" service model and the 3" subcompact, and love them both. In fact, I have a feeling I'll be getting the service model soon...

Whatever info I could give you would be overshadowed by a Google search, but I'll just say I would take an XD over a Glock, mainly for the trigger and the natural feel of target acquisition. Much less "brick-like."
 
I've decided on the sub compact in 9mm as well. Just gotta turn in my handgun paperwork and wait 3 months. (friggin' New Jersey). I dont know if I'll get that "XML" light though. Looks kinda like junk compared to an X200.
 
I'm saving for the 4" in .40 and should be going to purchase in about a month. I tried the subcompact but didn't really like the feel. My hands aren't especially big but I still like a beefier grip.

Both have huge memberships, good folks and lots and lots and lots of knowledge. If you type in XD compact in their searches me thinks you will get more data then you can shake a stick at.

All that being said the XD/HS2000 is a very good gun as a rule. Barring a lemon you should be happy.

I have a couple of Glocks (both 9mm) and a Springfield XD .357 Sig. I like the Glocks a lot, but I absolutely love the XD. The Glocks are cheaper to shoot because they're 9mm, but the XD is a lot more fun.

Out of all the pistols I own, if I could only keep one, it would be the XD. Even with the heavier load of the .357 Sig cartridge, it's more comfortable to shoot long term than the Glocks.
 
Great sites! Got them bookmarked. As far as the XD-SC goes, they make a magazine extender that gives you "pinky leverage'. That being said, now I'm considering the 4" Service Model as well...
 
What do you want the firearm for.

-Concealed Carry
-Target shooting
-Competetive shooting sports
-Home Defense
-Bullseye shooting
-Etc.

Guns are kinda like tools you kinda have to know what your needs are before picking one. Now some are good at doing many things but it is always good to shop with a primary criteria in mind.

If concealed carry is not an issue I don't see why you would want the shorter barrel, sight radius, capacity etc. of the itty bitty gun. Go with the full size, which itself is not all that huge.

Heck you may even want to look at other makes and models as they might fit a certain need you have better. I am not saying this a slam on the XDs just putting forth a suggestion.

Well, I'm starting to lean more and more to the 4" Service model. Surefire just emailed me back and said the X200 will NOT fit on the XD SubCompact. The rail is just too small. They have that "XML" light you can get for it, but it looks like its crap compared to the X200.
Couple that with my needs and wants for a handgun:
Range
Home/Self defense (CCW is basically impossible in NJ)
Possibly competitive shooting (USPSA)

The 4" Service model seems like the logical choice...Also to get it so my pinky fits on the grip, I have to get one of those magazine extenders (that don't add rounds). By then, its just as tall as the 4 and 5 inch.
 
Sorry, but I'm not hear good things about S&W autos. Its starting to look more and more like a XD 4" Service .40...

Curious if anyone has shot the .357 version....
 
Actually it is the S&W M&P for military and police. It is a nostalgic thowback to one of their classic revolvers.

I am not a fan of S&W autos either although the 59 series and 3913 are pretty darn good guns.

I would definitely go with the 4-5 inch model since your are in NJ. No point in taking the cons of a smaller gun without being able to utilize it's pros.

Other guns to look at that are roughly the same size and type.
Glock 19
Walther P99
SIG P228/229
HK P2000

My take on .357SIG as a cartridge.

1-It is still expensive and still not all that easy to find when compared to other more common calibers
2-There are 9x19mm +P+ loads that just about reach .357SIG ballistics.
3-There is alot of flash and muzzel flip with .357SIG, not so much recoil just a flip that tends to throw your sight picture off.
4-It is a great round that feeds very well and puts alot of power on target but I don't think it is worth the extra cost and effort to get.

Were I to be you I would seriously look at a 9x19mm for the following reasons.
1-The XD/HS was designed for that round initially.
2-9x19mm in a +P loading with a quality bullet (HP or EFMJ) makes a very effective round.
3-All pistol calibers inherently suck and it is more about shot placement then caliber
4-9x19mm is so cheap you will be able to shoot so much more.
5-9x19mm is so common you can find it anywhere.

Now even though I am a .45 guy at heart there is alot to be said for 9mm.

Things to consider in NJ. I believe hollow point ammo is illegal unless it is in your own home. Even if totally illegal both Federal and Corbon make round nosed/flat nosed rounds that function like high quality hollow points but are not classified as such. I would double check the legality of these though since NJ is patently anti gun and they may have passed laws recently against this type of ammo as well.

I used to have a SA XD9 Sub Compact in 9mm and I ended up selling it. It was a great shooting gun but the finish left alot to be desired. I carried the thing for three days and it was covered in rust. I would clean it and oil it (tried just about everything) and the rust would always come back. Now I stick with my Sig P239.
