Anyone know the power of DVD reader LDs?

Hi guys!

I was wondering... Since i got a few CD-RW DVD-ROM combo drives, there are a few red LDs in there..

I know they're not powerfull enough to burn anything, but they should at least make for good laser pointers..

So does anyone know the power of these (mW)? For example a 16x DVD reader LD? Or an 8x reader?

What current should i be driving these with?

Should i treat them as if they were 5mW or is it more like 10mW?


Any info would be apreciated!

You should treat all lasers with respect - I figure they're 1,000 mW unless I know FOR CERTAIN that they're not..

I can't answer the technical questions, though..
