I'm going to be purchasing upwards of 20 LED replacement PAR38 floodlights (for in-ceiling cans) soon for the kitchens in 3 different homes (myself, dad's, and in-law's). $$$$ :sick2:

My research seems to suggest that the Cree LR6 is the highest-quality replacement for the money, putting 650 lumens out the front, dimmable, nice smooth flood of light (no real hotspot) and good CRI too. They can be had at Polar-Ray.com out of Boulder (just North of me) for $80 each shipped.

I'm looking for something that is going to work well and not kill the LEDs prematurely like some of the el-cheapos out there (Feit).

Is there anything else I should consider? I've read of the eco-smart ones at Home Despot, but I've read mixed opinions of whether these are anywhere near the quality of the Cree LR6. I have no problem spending the extra $30/bulb if the Cree units are that much better and will last.

Am I missing some other option that is truely competitive with the LR6? TIA!

I will try to fix the CPF links in the next 2 weeks or until I give up in frustration. Can not do that and verify with CPF down.

OK, so I'll answer myself here. Thanks to a brand new thread ShineOnYouCrazyDiamond, it looks like the Cree CR6 at Home Despot might be worth a look too.

Still looking for input though.

Have you looked at the Cree CR6 also available from Polar-Ray? The CR6 was just recently released and has some advantages compared to the LR6 but some disadvantages. I believe the CR6 can be dimmed lower (5% instead of 20% IIRC) and has a lower cost . I think I read the Home Depot lights are basically the CR6 with a lesser warranty.

Edit: You beat me to it while I was posting...

Yeah, I saw that. I've been doing more reading on the CR6, and I'm guessing the EcoSmart CR6 is an identical product but warranted less to bring (future) costs down. These EcoSmart CR6's might be just the ticket, especially if I can find a decent coupon.

OK, you can't compare the ones at depot because they are CR6 units. They have 1 LED in them, as opposed to the LR6 which have 24 (I believe).

The LR6-DR1000 has 36 LEDs in them and a much more massive thermal design. I have a small 12x12 room with 4x DR-1000 units and it's almost TOO MUCH LIGHT for that space. I also have them in 3500K.

Is there anything better for cans? Not in my opinion.

So... LR6 at 80$, CR6 at 60$, or Ecosmart at 50$.

I did want to toss one more option out for you:

There is an ECOSMART 40 watt/ 60watt bulb for 18.47. 60 watt in a downlight, but I don't really know if you'd want to put it in a IC airtight can....

It's about 82 CRI if memory serves and 3032 K according to the package I read. It contains 2 LED from someone... it's made in the US, as far as I can tell from the vendor (lighting science) and all the materials come from the US as well (die cast molds, etc). Only the LEDs are made overseas.

My wife got pretty sick this weekend so I was not able to get out to do any comparisons. I realize that the CR6 and LR6 are different units, and that the CR6 is esentially a spec'd-down version ofthe LR6.

Are you sure about that???

I've seen pictures of both in my research, and I was thinking based off of those pictures that the CR6 was the exact same LED board (with 12 white LEDs) just not driven quite as hard as the LR6. Also, Cree claims the CR6 also uses their TrueWhite technology which is the blending of the high-power white LEDs with yellow and red SMT LEDs. Just have a hard time believing that the CR6 uses a single LED, especially at 575 Lumens out the front, while the LR6 utilizes 12 white (XR-E or XP-G?) LEDs for 650 Lumens out the front.

2 LEDs?

Yeah, saw those pics. Does not show the LEDs at all. The two thermal pads there are for the transistors you can see in the second picture. The LED board is held on the other side of that heatsink with 4 screws.

I did some more looking, and for the life of me I could not find the pictures on the net I'd seen (or though I had) of a CR6 disassembled. Maybe in all my time spent researching I got the LR6 and CR6 LED layout confused, and maybe I've only seen the LR6?

Either way, I'm stopping at HD on the way home from work and buying an ecosmart CR6 to do an in-home review with. I might fire it up a couple of times and check it's draw with my kill-a-watt, but then I'm taking it apart!!! The lens appears to be held in place by melting down three plastic tabs on the backside of the housing.

I have been using 2 of the Phillips Ecosmarts, I purchased at Home Depot about a month ago and I am very happy with them.
They are brighter than any other led bulb I have tried. I also have several of the $20 Ecosmarts from HD that I have been using in lamps for 3 months. They are a good buy, imo, if they last as long as they should.
I will try a 4sevens Futlight bulb once I see some feedback on them.
