I'm waiting for my light to come back from PT RMA. When it does, I'm thinking about (re)upgrading the LED. I did the P4 mod awhile back. Now I'm thinking about upgrading to an XP-G or something if it would make a nice difference in output.

Anyways, that got me thinking, I have never liked the 5mm LEDs that came in it. They are nice and floody, of course, but far too blue for my liking (and also slightly different tint and brightness). I'm really more of a neutral to warm-white guy. Can anyone suggest some good (and hopefully more efficient) white LEDs that I could use to replace the 5mm ones on my Apex while I have it open? Even if they aren't significantly brighter, I would be quite happy if they were about the same and a more pleasing tint.

A little while back I replaced the stock 5mm LEDs in my Apex with the new Cree 5mm's.

Here's the Apex with the original (Nichia CS?) LEDs:

And here's the Apex with the new Cree LEDs:

WAY too much throw! Wow, we need to do something about this!

So, I sanded the domes of the Cree LEDs:

Not too bad... the tint is much better than the original Nichias, and the overall output is increased. And with the sanded domes, it's even floodier.
