My new Arc 4+ (#0346) works perfectly in the default mode in which it arrived. But I have not been able to access the Brightness Menu in order to change the Primary level to 3 or 4 as Peter has suggested. This may be because I am too dense to understand the draft "Advanced User Manual" that is posted on this forum. To me it appears that the instructions for entering the Brightness Menu and the Options Menu are the same. When I try a 10 click sequence (starting with the light off) I do sometimes enter the Options Menu but never enter the Brightness Menu (as far as I can tell - maybe I just don't recognize it). Sometimes I don't get anything other than normal operation after 10 clicks. This suggests that my problem may be erratic click durations or rates rather than sheer ignorance - that is, a physical rather than an intellectual problem. The tail switch is a little stiff and that may contribute to my poor clicking performance. Can someone with more experience give me advice on what I should work on improving (mental or physical abilities)?

10 clicks, then PRESS...

Try it on my simulator... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks very much jpeg. Use of your simulator revealed that my primary problem was that the posted Advanced Instructions do not make the difference between entering the Brightnes and Options Menus as clear as your simulator. I don't see the key phrase "press and hold" for Brightness in the draft. But your simulator (where clicking is easy) also persuaded me that I did have a problem with erratic click duration and/or rate. The stiff switch was a contributing factor to my difficulty. Bottom line: proceeding more carefully - I have now successfully reset the Primary brightness level. For now I will not mess with this again since I expect that my clicking will become more consistent with practice and as the switch is broken in. Thanks Very Much for the quick advice! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

10-clicks, then press as jpeg said, then when you click again you'll see the light change. That means you in the setting mode for that brightness level. You can double-click to reverse direction. Once you have the level you want, press (means hold) until the confirmation sequence is completed.
