At what point did the ARC-LS no longer become practical for single cell operation? I have 4 custom bodies. 2 in Single cell D and 2 in Single Cell C and of course I have some single AA packs. I use these to eat up loose batteries. I was wondering at which point, the ARC-LS changed to a point that they are not practical for single cell use. If anyone knew at what serial number this happened, that would be great.
 
It changed several months ago when Arc started using current regulation set at 400mA. The change happened on units just below serial# 1000 I believe. 1.5v just isn't enough juice to drive the LS at 400mA+ for long.
 
I believe they were set at 300mA and the circuit design was a simpler DC-DC step-up converter.

The latest version uses a circuit that is current regulated and the output is set at 400mA. The voltage cut-off is set at ~1.5v to protect your rechargeables (2 AA in series, for example) from overdischarging. Setting the circuit up to accept voltages lower than approx. 1.5v would have required other sacrifices.
 
i believe it changed less than 2 months ago Sean....according to a e-mail discussion with Merri just this week, Arc is no longer making the single 1 AA holders. I had 4 on backorder since early November and was recently told Arc made a decision to no longer build ….

i do recall Peter saying that newer version LSs would not work with a single AA holder and would not be sold in that config, but wish i knew they were not going to ever consider building the single AA holder again...

i suggested to Merri perhaps Arc would consider posting a last time build on CPF…that if enough members were interested but....did not get a response back to that.

....nor to my order for a TSP now that i think about it.

of the LS & SLS's i own, they work ok with a single regular AAs..dimmer naturally... and just fine with a AA lithium. they also work using 2 "1/2 AA's" NiMh and in my usage I found using these 1/2 AA’s the output time is longer than the 1/5 N NiMh ( secret of the rechargeable lithium’s…by Whistler )…. by about 10 + minutes or so...probably a heat and density charge per circular area relationship as the cells are both rated 400 mA...and I’ve noticed this using different battery manufacturers.... 1/2 AA are easier to find and cheaper: $1.75 vs. $3.75 for the 1/5...but for the most part i too was hoping to use up loose batteries as well...

IMHO there should be an LS for lower output / long time usage like the original, I very much enjoy that 4 + hours of output light. and 1 LS for high output / short time…perhaps a selectable switch that would give the user both worlds…..

Saaby ya need to try it with a regular AA cell to be sure. My guess is it would not with a AA…larger 1.5V cells maybe….the LS current rating has confused me a little and maybe I should have posted my reasons earlier so here is another story

i use to post my current ratings of my arcs in my sig but then i wasn't sure if the values were the current driving the LED off the converter or overall current being measured at the battery so i removed them

my original LS, what is referred to as a "300" mA actually draws 380 mA at the battery
using a fresh 123 cell. Its dimmer with a single AA but runs for 3 + hrs,

i get 2+ hrs with my recent SLSs.. it varied a little between units. It does not have a raised Ag + button.

my SLS’s range from 380 to 480 mA at the battery
and they all have the green PCB with raised button with flashed Ag, (again using a fresh 123 cell)

if one chooses to measure the (s)LS you do need several power clips onto the head and holder metal ( plus the battery and arc "button" to minimize voltage drops to get a accurate measurement….3 connections to measure the current draw... about did it …for my reading i repeated the test using 3 different fluke DMMs, two flukes i use are the expensive $1k models.

..resolution to 6 digits..using 1 connection ya can be off by 50~100 mA

i just been catching up on the 1 C 2 D posts...original LSs would naturally work great.... for the later versions to be sure ya would have to test it as your SLS mA current draw may vary (but a larger C/D cell would have less of a voltage drop to).
