Well these are my options of procuring them from Greece....
(cannot buy them from overseas)

I need a tough knide for outdoors and these are among the ones I like.

I like the Gerber cos it has the sharpener/refresher on the sheath.(I cannot sharpen a knife. But I am very good at dulling it - so a butcher friend of mine does the chore for me).
I do not like the Gerber cos blade is shorter that I would like (5")

Guess I do not have to say much on the Cold-Steel

The Ka-bar is a classic and a safe choice especially concerning price. thanks god there is a short version of it.

Now the rest of the criteria are.
Thick blade
Tough Blade and point
Not necessarily easy to sharpen (better maintaining edge, see up for details)
Drop point is better than bowie

ETA: Could yuo comment on the steel used? I already have most of the steel types specs saved (firearm enthusiast) but I cannot interpret them when it comes to knife attibutes, apart for the fact that there is a balance of hardness, edge maintenance and strength. (rust is a non-issue for me)

So what do you suggest?

Get a RAT Cutlery RC-4 ou RC-6 instead, it put those knives to shame! I personally would never get the SKR from Cold Steel, quality control is an issue...

Plenty of stores will ship a RAT overseas. Check Knife Works out.

Cheers.

thanks for your input....But they issue is not if they sell the issue is what the Grrek customs/police is going to do to me when they scan the package....

Otherwise for the price I am going to pay here locally I would already have bought a handful (the asek is going 165 euros) that is $215!!!!!!!!!!

BTW one thing that lapsed my memory when I was making the first post...

what do you think about these knives grip?

To what purpose will you be putting the blade? The Kabar (it sounds as if you are refering to the original MKII FUK version in the newer short model with the leather washer handle) is my choice of those mentioned but it is carbon steel and will need more care than the stainless steels and the leather washer handle will need more care than the polymers of the others. The carbon steel Kabar is generally not hardened to as hard an edge as the others for ease of sharpening and less chipping of the edge under hard use. But that might mean you have to learn how to sharpen a knife or at least use a steel and strop to help keep it sharp, which aint a bad idea in itself ;)

PS there isnt much you cannot do with a 5 inch blade that you cannot do with a 6 or better if you use it correctly. Matter of fact several of my favorites are 4 or 5 inchs.

thanks lee...

well caring for it is no issue...

Use will be general outddor chores. But I need a stout blade for when I have to twist the knife etc...

Else I am well served with my teens' hair-splitting-sharpened one.

Maintaining an edge is a lost cause for me (other than the steel rod) Yesterday I tried once more to sharpen a mini folder. My freind gave up from a point on. Either I am messing with cheap steels or I am totally worthless.

Blade length must be 5 to 6 and no more so ues I am talking about the Short kabar in the palstic handle version.(I have found it locally for 65 euros)

I ahve also checked OF suggestion on RAT knives....Boy that RC-5 is sweet. I called a friend taht used to live in Germany a little before midnight and was asking him how can it can be purchased from there (no customs control within EU).

Your comments on blade hardness of the KaBar worries me...Pitty my friend that will work with harder steels in case all turn out good...

more later, kostas

Why dont you try a Spyderco Sharpmaker sharpening system, or a Lansky system they are really extremely easy to learn and use. If my wife can use them they are pretty easy and she uses both. If you are talking the plastic handled version Kabar is it the version with stainless steel blade? The blade is hardened and treated differently than the old Milspec version if so.

well I have known about these sharpeners for 20 years now, since my first Guns&Ammo issue.
Huh, but I'll have to find them from outdoors too.

No I did not talkabout the stainless version...I do not see any short version of it in KaBar's catalog...

My oh my the search goes on....

The kabar short does not just have a smaller blade, but it has a smaller handle also. It is seems smaller in ever direction. Can you only get that version of Kabar? Because Kabar makes the impact that could be decent. http://www.knifesupply.com/eshop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=KA1461 My brother got this knife and likes it, but because it is D2 he has a hard time sharpening it. But that is not a problem for you. It also has a full width tang, the kabar short is tapered I believe.
