Let's say I wanted to build a watch. I can get a good automatic movement pretty cheap. I can get cases and crystals, etc. Is this something an average/handy person could do or would I be in over my head? What kinds of tools would I need other than small screwdrivers?

timezone.com- you can read on that site until you wear your eyes out and start talking to yourself. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

After awhile you discover that lots of watch brands use just a few different movements. Very few watch manufacturers make their own movements.

Here is another site to check- westcoastime.com. They have an interesting variety of watches that are sort of like what you have in mind- somebody bought movements, cases, hands, faces, bezels and put them together.

Another interesting site is bill yao's. He takes production watches and swaps out the faces and hands to make them look different. Google something like "bill yao watch" and you should find it.
