We recently had this company open an outlet here in Jackson, Tn. (population 60,000), and originally went there for some mundane items. They started carrying the SL TT line, bought my first Photon there (my first LED), and started looking around.

I had NO idea of the VAST array of sealed, rechargeable, etc., batteries avaliable. Almost any configuration, size; we are talking about multiple AMP HOURS here, instead of mAh capacity. Milky's thread about his "candle" came to mind. You can get a 3-4-5-6-7-8-12 volt battery here for $ 10-20 that would power a humongous bunch of stuff.

Just never thought this stuff was available.

Much room for thought here. I am thinking about a multi room emergency lighting system thet would go for almost forever.

A lot of y'all live in BIG cities, so this post may seem nubie, but there is a LOT of interesting stuff available.............

The gentleman running the store turns out to be a closet flashaholic, so we are getting along fine.

Yes, I agree that Batteries Plus has quite a few neat things suitable for modding use.

They are franchises, but the ones here in Dallas offer a 15% law enforcement discount, so if you are L.E. you should check to see if your local one offers a discount as well.

No, John, the post doesn't seem 'newbie' to me at least.

There's a Batteries Plus store here in town, but I've never been there - I just 'assumed' that it was probably a good place to go for a replacement battery for my cell 'phone or something. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon6.gif

I'll have to stop by just to see what's there.

The difficulty (IMHO) with a decent capacity 'whole house' battery backup system (at least for lighting) is the difficulty finding a suitible charger that won't fry the batteries instead of floating them ... I used to have one, but I sold that with the house a number of years ago.

The guy that bought it was a machinist and the 'techiness' of having lights all over the house that came on in an emergency appealed to him - helped sell that ol' tri-level, actually.

Right now my backup is only 4.5AH, but it is at least a start ...

Thanks!

We've got one here also...but just as Tomas...I've never been there. Now I'm going to have to "drop in" next time I'm over that way! Thanks for enlightening us!

I got my 8 Trojan T125 batteries from Batteries Plus, not the cheapest place, but the only place locally. And shipping on 800lbs is not cheap. So it ended up being the cheapest in the long run.

Hopefully, not all Batteries Plus store operates the way the one here does. I realize that not everyone could enjoy going to a Batteries Plus just to browse around and acquaint themselves with the batteries and such, but I can. I imagine most people go in needing something specific, and appreciate the quick response from the store personnel, but I don't. It seems the minute I arrive, someone approaches with "could I help you find something". My response of "I don't really have anything in mind, I'm just looking around" doesn't seem to sink in. They follow me around offering explanations of everything I stop to see, and seem to have no more expertise than the Radio Shack clerks that do the same thing. That bugs me.

I did notice they carried PAL lights the last time I was there. They carry the Survivor and the Workman models.

JohnK,
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger! I live near a town of 2,000 and an hour away from the any town over 7,000, (and 40 minutes away from that one!). I've been going to the Battery Plus store across the border from me in Oregon for several years. They really do have a great selection of batteries and related items. Their prices, (like most places), are high on some items and good on others. Their LED light selection broadens every time I go in. The one I go to has a great policy. If you buy the battery from them, they will take apart your device, (whatever it is), remove the old battery, resolder the new one in and reassemble your device for no charge.

They delt with me.
I needed 12 7.2 AHr cells for ups(es?).
I was going to buy them from digikey, but they met me in the middle.
I don't mind paying a little more to support local shops.
However, their original price was quite high....

Empath,

I had the same experience with the local franchise. These people should realize that some of us are real uncomfortable with that modus operandus. For specialty batteries, they're OK. For commodity rechargeables, they're expensive and behind the curve (they're still selling 1200mAH NiMH for $4.00 a piece)
